Denver Broncos vs. St. Louis Rams Free Pick 8/24/13

The Denver Broncos and the St. Louis Rams face off on Saturday in Denver as the teams play in a week 3 NFL preseason matchup.
The Denver Broncos haven’t been overly impressive on the field this preseason and while they are shrugging it off they were dominated and then pasted by the Seahawks in week two. What made the loss to Seattle so bad was much of the Seahawks damage came against the Broncos starters as even Peyton manning never got it going. While there is little doubt Manning will be at the top of what he has left of his game for the season, the Broncos running back situation is clouded with no one emerging as the clear starter and it is situation where no one has been good enough to go out and seize it though Montee Ball averaged 4.7 yards per carry last week. Julius Thomas has had a fine preseason catching four more balls for 70 yards in week 2 while Damaryius Thomas and Wes Welker had three catches each. Defensively for the Broncos the situation looks to be getting worse and I am not just talking about the 40 points Seattle laid on them as they moved the ball at will. It has become clear that Von Miller will miss at least a quarter of the regular season but it is looking like it could even be more for a banned substance as his sample was diluted meaning it was possibly tampered with to mask it making it a second or third violation so the suspension could be up to the entire season. The talk right now is six games and that would be a big break for Miller and the Broncos at this point in this messy situation.
The St. Louis Rams played fairly well in their loss to the Green Bay Packers and despite scoring just seven points there were several positives. Sam Bradford passed for 156 yards but he fumbled away his best scoring chance. The Rams running game was shut down against the Packers as Isaiah Pead had just 19 yards on 11 carries. Tavon Austin had four receptions to get into the mix as he figures to be a prominent part of the St. Louis offense and Chris Givens continued his strong preseason with a 57 yard catch. Robert Quinn had a sack for St. Louis and he figures to have a solid season while Janoris Jenkins, James Laurinaitis, and Cortland Finnegan all got in on the tackling.
This is an interesting game as while it is preseason there isn’t a team in the NFL that wants to go into the regular season on a down note and that’s what the Broncos are looking like. This is an exciting time for the Rams as they look like they will make a run at turning the corner and getting this many points St. Louis who has a huge edge in the backup QB spots gets my pick here.
