Miami Dolphins vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Free Pick - 8/24/13

The Miami Dolphins host instate rivals the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a Saturday NFL preseason clash.
Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots first team out played the Tampa Bay starters in a 25-21 victory that was close thanks to the Buccaneers bench in the 4th. Brady picked apart the Bucs secondary with an 11-12, 107 yard perfomance despite a sprained knee. Ryan Mallet (12-20/137) enjoyed some success of his own with he and Brady both tossing for touchdowns. Josh Freeman had a short, yet dismal two series, going 2-3 for eight yards and three sacks before Mike Glennon (12-22/121) came in and threw for a pair of scores and a pick. If I had one piece of advice for Tampa Bay it would be run the ball because the air waves don’t look friendly. Mike James and Peyton Hillis gave the offense some quality production on the ground with a combined 154 yards on 33 carries. The defense was tagged for 382 yards and needs obvious improvement after allowing 44 points to Baltimore in week one.
Miami’s 24-17 defeat at the hands of the Texans in week two was almost typical of what we see in the preseason with both teams playing their starters early before giving the back ups plenty of playing time. The Dolphins defense struggled to control Matt Shaub who was 8-11 for 92 yards and a score and also had issues with Case Keenum (11-18/150) and TJ Yates (7-9/84) with each thiteming for scores. In fairness, I’d be lying if I said I knew who was playing on the defensive side of the football after the first quarter so I’ll look at those numbers a bit skeptically. Ryan Tannehill did do well for himself, completing 10-15 for 141 yards and a TD although the Fins had no passing attack after his first quarter stint and really no rushing attack to speak of. It appeared Miami wanted to give the regulars some work and get them out of harms way and it also appears that the Texans have some better back ups, if that means a whole lot.
I am leaning to the Dolphins here because they simply look like the better team, especially at quarterback. The Buccaneers have more to prove in my opinion although I can’t say with certainty who is playing and for how long but I would expect the respective starters to see extended time before next weeks final preseason contest…
