NFL News: Player News and Updates for 8/21/13

We’ve only got one more day to wait for the official round of “dress rehearsal” games begin in the NFL’s third preseason week. That said, there’s still plenty of news coming in from all across the league, and some of it will significantly affect the teams involved. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening out there this morning. Here’s the latest.
Darelle Revis, CB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Bucs fans’ spirits continued to lift yesterday, as Revis was able to make it through practice without any issues. He’s the centerpiece of a revamped Tampa Bay defense that should help the team make some significant noise within their division this season. He’s coming off a torn ACL in his left knee, but has continued to improve since being traded from the Jets earlier this year.
The plan for Revis was originally to have him sit out the preseason and start Week 1 (which, coincidentally, is against the Jets), but now there seems to be some optimism that he could be ready for the Saturday evening game against Miami. Whether or not he plays will likely hinge on how he looks in practice the next couple of days.
Two Starters Named: Yesterday was a big day when it came to quarterbacks, as we learned who would be the Week 1 starter for two different teams. Neither was a real surprise, however.
The Bitemns will be rolling with Brandon Weeden, after a training camp battle against Jason Campbell that seemed more lip-service than anything. Weeden was always assumed to be the starter, and spent the entire camp working with the first team. He’s got some weapons, now he just needs to deliver on the field.
Meanwhile, the Eagles named Michael Vick the No. 1 for their new offense. Vick beat out Nick Foles for the job by posting a 13-of-15 passing line for 199 yards and a score through a pair of preseason games. He’s probably the better guy for Philly’s new system, and it will be interesting to see what he can do with it.
Danny Amendola, WR, New England Patriots: You’ve gotta love the Patriots and their tight-lipped, cat-and-mouse game when it comes to injury information. The latest round of is-he-or-isn’t-he concerns new WR Amendola, who has missed practice the past two days with an unspecified injury. After looking at the tape from the Patriots’ last preseason game, there was speculation that he’d sustained a head injury. A later report refuted that information, saying that his condition wasn’t head-related, and that he’s considered day-to-day.
That’s good news for New England. Even though we’re still not sure what Amendola’s issue is, at least it’s not a concussion. The last thing they need is another receiver going down with an injury.

Jermichael Finley, TE, Green Bay Packers: We–and most experts–have been saying it for the past couple of seasons, but Finley looks primed for a breakout this year. No, we’re serious this time.
Even though he’s coming off an underwhelming 667-yard, two-touchdown season in 2012, Packers coach Mike McCarthy says Finley is having his best training camp yet, and that’s just the latest in a series of glowing reviews for the six-year veteran. Finley has had a few “almost there” campaigns–most notably his 767 yards and eight scores in 2011–but in this contract year, we expect him to put everything together. Seriously this time.
