The Detroit Lions and the New England Patriots face off on Thursday Night in the Motor City for a week three preseason matchup which is likely a last look at most of the starters before the regular season starts.

The Detroit lions were belted as far as the final score in their week 2 preseason matchup against the Browns but it was the Browns who took the physical end of the beating. While normally a 24-6 loss could be reason for concern the Lions shouldn’t care all that much. Matthew Stafford has looked efficient and that was without Calvin Johnson who was held out of the week two game. Reggie Bush wasn’t all that effective rushing the ball averaging less than two yards per carry but he was impressive catching the ball out of the backfield, a backfield he will likely share with Mikel Leshoure this season. Defensively the Lions were bringing it last week and expect the same here as Ndamakung Suh, Nick Fairley, and Stephen Tulloch all look to be game ready for the start of the season.
The big news for the New England patriots is the health of Tom Brady’s knee. Brady has been wearing a brace but that is at the request of Pats owner Robert Kraft. Brady didn’t look injured a bit against Tampa Bay last week completing every pass until his final attempt. Wile the number two spot looks to be Ryan Mallett’s we have to question whether or not Tim Tebow will even make the roster as he threw for negative yardage in the win. Steven Ridley appears to be the go to guy in the backfield but it looks to be an interesting scenario as LeGarrette Blount, Brandon Bolden, and Shane Vereen are all competing for time in what is becoming a very crowded backfield. Danny Amendola’s six catches make me believe Wes Welker may not be missed much and Bellichick loves his young receivers like Josh Boyce. With Rob Gronkowski unlikely to play in week 1 of the regular season the Patriots are scrambling just a little bit at tight end. Marcus Forston is trying to make a case to be the heir to Vince Wilfork while Brandon Spikes and Dont’a Hightower appear to signify a youth movement at linebacker.
The Lions are favored in this one and while preseason comes down to who cares more, the Patriots just seem to be a lot better organized and barring another disastrous Tebow performance I like the Patriots to win this one.
