The Arizona Cardinals and the San Diego Chargers close out Saturday Night NFL action as they meet for a week 3 NFL preseason matchup.
The Arizona Cardinals got off to a fast start last season but they went on one of the worst tailspins in recent memory as they just couldn’t buy a win. With QB problems both in staying healthy and the play on the field the Cardinals acquired Carson Palmer who has completed barely over 50 percent of his passes in preseason. The Cards also looked to upgrade the running attack y getting Rashard Mendenhall but he is banged up and Stanford’s Stefan Taylor has carried the load for the preseason. Larry Fitzgerald remains one if the top receivers in the NFL but the Cardinals have never been able to replace Anquan Boldin and last year’s first round choice Michael Floyd is looking more like a bust than the answer. The Srizona defense brings heat from everywhere and then they try an mix in playmakers in the secondary to take advantage of balls thrown in a hurry. Tyrann Mathieu has 11 tackles in the preseason and Darryl Washington has 10 but the line play from Calais Campbell and Darnell Docket are going to be huge for this unit.

The San Diego Chargers used to be a playoff tea just about every season but that has changed in recent years as the Chargers have taken a big step backwards. QB Phillip Rivers still has the quickest release in football but he hasn’t had consistent targets to throw to nor a steady running game so he forces balls and that’s where his troubles usually begin. All of the talk was going with the hot hand at RB which generally means a committee situation but Ryan Mathews looks to have emerged as the best of the bunch. At receiver Robert Meacham has been a bust but rookie Keenan Allen looks promising and maybe Antonio Gates becomes 100 percent healthy again. Defensively Eric Weddle is still the guy who seems to be in on every play but Dwight Freeney is now in the fold and we are still waiting to see rookie Manti Te’o. The Chargers still have some work to do and while they still have some of the pieces in place they still have plenty of pieces missing.
When I look at preseason games this is the type of game I stay away from, two teams who just haven’t done anything consistently lately except beat themselves with sloppy play and mistakes and this game should be more of the same. Getting more than a field goal though I will take the Chargers.
