The New Orleans Saints head to the Sunshine State to face the Miami Dolphins in preseason action on Thursday.
The Saints improved to 2-1 in the preseason with a 31-23 victory at Houston with most of their starters playing the first half. The Saints offense looked to be in mid season form with 17 second quarter points before the back ups finished off a solid offensive performance with a touchdown in each of the last two quarters. Drew Brees only played three possessions and went 4-6 for 104 yards and a score before Luke McCown came on and did plenty of damage himself (10-14/118). New Orleans dominated the airways with 302 passing yards with Pierre Thomas and Kenny Stills hauling in receptions of 51 yards and 54 yards respectively. The ground game seemed to take a back seat with just 78 yards on 21 totes while the defense was tagged for almost 500 yards but kept Houston out of the end zone with a goal line stand in the 2nd quarter.
Miami was upended 17-16 by instate rival Tampa Bay to fall to 1-3 in the preseason. The Dolphins back ups allowed a touchdown with just over a minute left which likely cost some body a spot on the roster and saved some body on the Buccaneers. Miami seemed to play much of the first half on Tampa Bay’s side of the field and in fact recorded 17 snaps inside the Bucs 20 yard line with only one trip to the end zone to show for their efforts. Ryan Tannehill (17-27/150) hit Brandon Gibson with a 4 yard scoring strike for the Fins only TD while Caleb Sturgis nailed three field goals. Miami tried to run the ball to no avail with 30 totes for just 78 yards so the offense needs some polish although the defense smothered Tampa Bay by holding them to a mere 160 yards which was impressive despite being preseason.
I an left scratching my head trying to figure out how Miami lost despite allowing just 160 yards. My thinking here is the back ups play exclusively so I’ll take the touchdown even though that’s suspiciously high in my view…
