With preseason Week 3 in the books, we’re entering the home stretch in the countdown to the regular season. The games will start to count before long, and that will bring along a constant stream of NFL news from across the league. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what’s happening out there this morning. Here’s the latest.

Saints-Texans Notes: The first half of this one belonged to the Texans receiving corps. They racked up the yardage before the break, with Andre Johnson accounting for 131 yards all by himself. QB Matt Shaub was decent, posting a 15-for-26 line without a TD or interception. Ben Tate was also solid in replacement of injured star Arian Foster, rushing 11 times for 74 yards and a score.
On the other side, Drew Brees only got three possessions to work with, finishing 4-for-6 for 104 yards and a TD. The Saints’ backups kept them in this one, eventually pulling out a 31-23 win. Rookie WR Kenny Stills impressed with two big grabs for 54 yards and a score.

Vikings-49ers Notes: The flamboyant Lavelle Hawkins was the talk of this one, as he managed a 105-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. He drew a couple of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties at the tail end of it, however, which marred his efforts. Hawkins drew another unsportsmanlike penalty for a head-butt after a 22-yard catch later in the game.
Aside from that, things looked pretty routine for the defending NFC champs, with their defense making things difficult for the Vikings in San Francisco’s 34-14 win. There was an Adrian Peterson sighting here, but he didn’t touch the ball in his (very) limited action.

Week 4 Preseason Schedule: All of the Week 4 preseason games will be occurring in one fell swoop this Thursday, bringing the warm-ups to a close and the regular season ever closer. (Week 1 will begin next Thursday with the Ravens and Broncos opening things up.) In the meantime, let’s take a look at the upcoming games in the final week of preseason.

Thursday, August 29:
Eagles at Jets, 7:00 PM ET
Colts at Bengals, 7:00 PM ET
Lions at Bills, 7:00 PM ET
Jaguars at Falcons, 7:30 PM ET
Steelers at Panthers, 7:30 PM ET
Redskins at Buccaneers, 7:30 PM ET
Saints at Dolphins, 7:30 PM ET
Giants at Patriots, 7:30 PM ET (NFL Network)
Titans at Vikings, 8:00 PM ET
Ravens at Rams, 8:00 PM ET
Browns at Bears, 8:00 PM ET
Packers at Chiefs, 8:00 PM ET
Texans at Cowboys, 8:00 PM ET
Cardinals at Broncos, 9:00 PM ET
49ers at Chargers, 10:00 PM ET (NFL Network)
Raiders at Seahawks, 10:00 PM ET

QB News: We’ve got a few tidbits for you from three spots whose seasons are already muddied with quarterback controversies and concerns. The first comes from the Jets, who are fighting off criticism after Mark Sanchez was inserted late in Saturday’s game and promptly injured his shoulder. The latest on him is that he’s considered day-to-day. He won’t be playing in the preseason finale (and likely wouldn’t have anyway), so we’ll have to wait until closer to the regular season opener to figure out who gets the first snaps in New York.
Then there’s the Raiders, who announced that Terrelle Pryor would be starting their final preseason game against the Seahawks, which will give him one final chance to win the starting job in Oakland over Matt Flynn, who hasn’t exactly dazzled anyone thus far.
Finally, the Bills are in trouble now that Kevin Kolb has been diagnosed with a “serious” concussion--which could potentially end his career. They’ve inked the much-maligned Matt Lienart and traded for Thad Lewis, as they were hurting for QB depth with rookie E.J. Manuel on the shelf with a knee injury.
