Denver Broncos vs. Arizona Cardinals Free Pick 8/29/13

The Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals play out the NFL preseason as they meet for a week 4 matchup.

The Denver Broncos are one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season, but I am not in the camp that supports the idea. The Broncos have some things working in their favor; of course Denver has Peyton Manning under center and if he still has as much in the tank as we saw for the bulk of last season, it’s always a great place to start. Offensively, after Manning, the drop off is quick and steep. No running back has emerged from the group to replace Willis McGahee, so it looks like a committee with Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno, along with Ronnie Hillman. Damaryius Thomas was nothing without Manning so it’s hard to believe that he is any better than Peyton makes him. The Defense is aging and they will be without their best player for the first six games of the season, Von Miller, who spun, ducked, backpeddled, and did whatever he thought he could do to avoid being caught and his “brilliant” plan nearly got him a full year suspension. Regardless of Miller’s off the field thought process, which will remain a mystery to most of us, he’s one heck of a football player on the field and he is irreplaceable, so the Broncos will simply be forced to do the best they can, which should amount to a fraction of the productivity of what Miller could have provided. The Denver secondary isn’t good and, without the pass rush, they should be even worse. Denver was beat deep for a touchdown late in a playoff game for a game deciding score, something that has only happened a handful of times in the history of the NFL, not a good sign.

The Arizona Cardinals are looking to improve over last season whe tnhey won their first four games and then won just once over the course of the next 12 games. I never thought I would be writing this, but Carson Palmer has actually looked like a reasonable NFL QB, from what we have seen of him in the preseason. There is no comparison to the Palmer we saw with the Cardinals to the player we saw with the Raiders recently. The Cardinals still have big problems in the backfield, where no one seems to ever be able to stay healthy, as the past two years it has been Ryan Williams and now it is Rashard Mendenhall. Larry Fitzgerald is still one of the best in the game, but it is time for Michael Floyd to step up and, with the catch he made for a touchdown last week, he just might be ready to. The Cardinals defense is one of the best in the NFL, but they were hung out to dry by their offense last year. Like Denver, their best player and quite possibly the best interior LB in football, Daryl Washington, is due to serve a suspension. The Cardinals defense relies on the big pass rush and then playmakers in the secondary to make plays, and they have them with Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu, who’s looked sharp in the preseason.

This is game four so we wont be seeing Manning or Palmer, what we are probably going to see is one of the worst QB’s in all of football in Brock Osweiler. Osweiler, who has a less than solid skill set, seems to have gotten by at the past two levels on his height alone, but when he was called on to do anything it has resulted in his team being on the wrong side of a very lopsided score. Honestly, I have no idea how he has a gig in the NFL. The Cardinals have a gigantic edge here in the backup QB department, with Drew Stanton and I look for them to ride that to victory in a game I won’t be tuning in to.
