NFL Updates: Week 1 Schedule, Tebow and More
August 30, 2013
Even if it was mostly backup players, last night was a pretty frenzied evening in the NFL. We’re now officially just six days away from the regular season opener, so the anticipation is running high. On that note, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players and storylines that everyone is talking about this morning. Here’s the latest.
League Settles Suit: We’ll touch on this story this morning, as it was the biggest headline from the last day. The NFL reached a settlement agreement with 4,500 retired players yesterday, bringing to an end the months of mediation the two sides had undergone over cognitive injuries from concussions suffered during play.
Here’s what the agreement entails: the league will pay $765 million (and legal fees) to those involved in the suit, with individual awards capped at a maximum of $5 million. The payments will be determined by an independent panel and spread over a 20-year period. Additional money will be allotted toward concussion research. As part of the deal, the NFL doesn’t have to admit any wrongdoing.
It’s a big day for the league’s retirees and their families, but you can bet we haven’t heard the last of this story just yet.

Robert Meachem, WR, San Diego Chargers: It’s been a rough off-season for Meachem thus far. After reports swirled during camp about his inability to run routes and separate effectively, he’s now dealing with an injury on top of everything else. He was diagnosed with a concussion after last night’s game against the 49ers after snatching four balls for 23 yards.
Meachem’s Week 1 status is still unclear at this point, which further depletes an already exhausted Chargers receiving corps.
Tim Tebow, QB, New England Patriots: Fighting to make the Patriots’ final roster, Tebow argued his case in the final stats of last night’s game against the Giants, tossing two touchdowns and an interception in a 6-for-11 passing line for 91 yards. He also racked up 30 more on the ground.
The odds are against Tebow making the roster, as the Patriots normally carry just two quarterbacks. Tom Brady and Ryan Mallet aren’t going anywhere, so we’ll have to see what the team chooses to do with their highly-publicized off-season addition.
