The Philadelphia Eagles and their new head coach Chip Kelly will be on display on Monday Night Football when the Eagles head to Washington to face the Redskins.
The Washington Redskins have one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the league under center in Robert Griffin III. RG3 has sat out this preseason as the Redskin QB has been nursing his injured ACL he suffered in the playoffs against the Seahawks. There has been question all preseason long whether or not RG3 will be ready for the season opener against the Eagles, but Griffin has been cleared by doctors and it has been announced that he will in fact be under center on Monday Night. With Griffin under center, and Morris in the backfield, the Redskins have one of the most dynamic running games in the league, but it will be interesting to see how defenses adapt to the read-option attack the Redskins deployed last season. Defensively the ‘Skins are solid, especially at home, where last season the Redskin stop unit was allowing just 22 points per game on average. The Skins played very well at home all season last year, ending the year with a +2.1 point margin in Washington.

The Philadelphia Eagles head to Washington on Monday night to face off against the Redskins. The Eagles will have a brand new look to their offense this season as Chip Kelly took the head coaching position vacated by Andy Reid. Kelly is famous for his fast, no huddle offense he employed in Oregon. It will be interesting to see how this offense transitions to the NFL, as the officials dictate the pace more in the NFL than the college game (spotting the ball etc). I have heard interviews with former players and coaches saying that the pace will be much faster than your normal, huddle style offense, but not near the speed we are used to seeing his Ducks operate in Oregon. Time will tell. Michael Vick will be under center for the Eagles, and while struggled mightily last season, the Eagles QB seems perfect for this type of offense. Vick even stated that he feels like football is fun for him again. Like the speed of the offense, time will tell. Defensively the Eagles really, really struggled last season as the “wide-9” approach just wasn’t effective, allowing too many gaps in the middle of their line for opposing offenses to exploit. On the road last season, the Eagles were particularly bad, having just a -12.5 point differential.
As far as line movements go, the Eagles have been getting more and more action. Initially this number opened up at -5 for the ‘Skins, and now it is down to -3 and -3.5 in some books for Washington, with the Redskins getting the vast majority of bet tickets placed on them (at the time of writing, approx. an 80/20 split).
This should be a fun game to watch, as the schedule makers hit a homerun putting this game on Monday night. The Eagles offense should give the Redskins some problems, and look for the Eagles to play hard for their coach, especially right out of the gate. We caught a glimpse of what a fast paced no huddle approach can do in the NFL last season with the Pats, and with the master calling the shots, and a mobile threat at QB in Vick, the Eagles could be dangerous offensively.
I don’t know if I’ll go as far as picking the Eagles to upset the Redskins here, but getting a field goal or more (hopefully you can buy the hook, or your book offers it) with the Eagles and this new offense, seems like a solid play.
