NFL Updates: Sanchez, Steelers-Bengals Injuries and More
September 15, 2013
The bulk of the NFL’s Week 2 games will be happening in the coming hours, so we football fans have plenty to take in today. There are some intriguing matchups on the slate today, as well as a handful of interesting storylines happening across the league. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the noteworthy players out there and see what we can be expecting on the field today and tomorrow.
Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets: The long, strange saga of the Jets quarterback situation continues to write new chapters for itself. Yesterday, Sanchez was placed on short-term injured reserve, meaning he can come back after Week 10. There’s still no official word yet as far as what he’s planning to do about his injured shoulder, but he’s given indications that he’ll try to rehabilitate it rather than undergo season-ending surgery.
The rehab choice seems rather odd, as the Jets have all but moved on from Sanchez, wanting to distance themselves as much as possible from the Butt-Fumbling debacle of last season. He believes he can play this year, however, and it looks like he’ll make a legitimate comeback attempt.

Ed Reed, S, Houston Texans: We may get our first official look at Reed in a Texans jersey today. He’s been sidelined with a hip injury, but a pre-game workout will decide his fate this week. If Reed looks like he can go, he’ll suit up and be active for Houston’s Week 2 matchup against the Titans. If not, he’ll be sitting out like he did last week.
The general feeling is that Reed won’t get a whole lot of work if he’s able to play. Shiloh Keo will be starting and getting most of the snaps once again while the veteran works his way back into playing shape.
Steelers Injury Notes: There were a few notables on the injury report for Pittsburgh in advance of tomorrow night’s Steelers-Bengals matchup. Rookie RB Le’Veon Bell has been ruled out; he’s still recovering from his strained foot. We’re probably looking at another month before he’s back on the field.
Other noteworthy players who made the list include Heath Miller (out), Cortez Allen (out), Curtis Brown (doubtful), Shaun Suisham (probable) and Steve McLendon (probable).
Bengals Injury Notes: On the other side of the field, Cincinnati is dealing with a few injury concerns as well. Mike Pollak and Brandon Ghee are both out after missing practice Friday and yesterday. Safety Jeromy Miles is doubtful with a hamstring injury that kept him out of practice as well.
Tackle Andrew Whitworth is considered questionable with a knee injury, and this could be his second consecutive missed game, as he was out for the opener as well. He was limited in this week’s practice. On the bright side, the team will likely have Vontaze Burfict out on the field; he’s listed as probable.
