NFL News: Player News and Updates for 9/20/13

Week 3 is already underway in the NFL, now that the dust has settled between the Chiefs and Eagles. Looking ahead to the weekend, we’ve got plenty of interesting matchups left on the schedule, so with that in mind let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players and ongoing storylines from around the league as we wait for Sunday. Here’s the latest.

Chiefs-Eagles Notes: The Eagles’ much-talked-about-offense sputtered last night, leading to a sloppy 16-26 loss to the returning Andy Reid and the Chiefs. KC’s defense was the star in this one, tallying five turnovers and five sacks on the evening. The only real bright spot for the Eagles was LeSean McCoy, who posted 158 yards and a score on 20 carries.
Meanwhile, KC QB Alex Smith let Jamaal Charles do the heavy lifting, netting 172 total yards and a score. Ryan Succup added four field goals to cap a dominant night for the 3-0 Chiefs.
Looking ahead, the Eagles have their work cut out for them in Week 4. They’ll have to go to Denver to face the Broncos, who boast a high-flying offense of their own. The Chiefs will host the Giants, and you can bet they’ll be watching their opponents closely this weekend to see if they can finally get a running game going.

Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons: One major player to watch in the Falcons’ game in Miami this weekend is Jones. He’s coming off a big-time performance at home against St. Louis in Week 2, where he posted a whopping 182 yards and a score on 11 receptions. That gives Jones 258 yards and two touchdowns on 18 grabs so far this year, statistics which are likely a bit inflated because of fellow WR Roddy White’s injury issues, but still impressive nonetheless.
Speaking of White, he was able to practice yesterday on a limited basis after sitting out Wednesday’s session. Today’s practice will go a long way in determining how healthy he’ll be for the Dolphins. His ailing ankle has been a nagging issue that’s held him back from truly shining thus far.

Brandon Marshall, WR, Chicago Bears: Another WR we’re excited about seeing this weekend is Marshall. He’s managed 15 grabs (on 20 targets) for 217 yards and a pair of scores in the Bears’ two games thus far, and he’ll try to keep the 100-yard games going on “Sunday Night Football” this weekend against the Steelers.
Getting in Marshall’s way will be the Pittsburgh pass defense, who–despite their two losses–have been pretty darn good against opposing wide receivers. Through two games, they’ve allowed no more than 66 yards to any receiver. That’s a small sample size, sure, but what speaks volumes is CB Ike Taylor’s shadow coverage of A.J. Green in Week 2. Green finished with six receptions, but only managed 41 yards. Is a similar treatment in store for Marshall? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Week 3 Schedule: Now that the third round of NFL games have officially begun, we can’t help but look forward to the weekend set of matchups. Let’s take a glance ahead and see what’s in store for the weekend. Here’s a look at who’s playing and what networks you can see them on.
