NFL Updates: Breaking News on Ponder, Pryor and More

September 27, 2013

See the Latest Odds

Following the 49ers’ big victory over the Rams last night, Week 4 in the NFL has officially begun. There are tons of ongoing storylines and considerations all across the league this morning, so let’s take our daily look around the NFL and see what’s developing as we head into the weekend. Here’s the latest.

49ers-Rams Notes: Last night’s edition of “Thursday Night Football” was a one-sided affair. It took San Francisco’s offense a quarter or so to get going, but they ended up burying divisional rival St. Louis in an eventual 35-11 win that took any remaining wind out of the Rams’ sails. Frank Gore (153 yards and a TD) and Anquan Boldin (90 yards and a TD) were the big performers in this one, with the Niners defense stepping up big-time in the absence of a handful of key players.
St. Louis really had no offense to speak of, with a field goal and a garbage-time TD being their only successes. Their most glaring issue was a nonexistent running game that featured Daryl Richardson getting only 16 yards on 12 carries.
Next week, the Rams get the Jaguars and the 49ers will take on the Texans.

Matt Cassel, QB, Minnesota Vikings: We’ve got some breaking news for you this morning, and it concerns the impending Vikings-Steelers matchup set for Sunday in London. This morning it was announced that Minnesota QB Christian Ponder wouldn’t be starting due to a rib injury, and that he’ll be replaced by backup Matt Cassel.
This is a somewhat shocking development, as Ponder had been taking the first-team snaps in practice this week. The team is apparently concerned about him getting hit and putting himself in serious danger, however. The fracture in his ribs is reportedly close to his heart, which brings long-term health concerns into the conversation. That brings Cassel into the mix, and if he tosses a good game in London against Pittsburgh, we could have a full-blown quarterback controversy on hand in Minnesota. There’s currently no set timetable for Ponder’s return, but we’ll keep you posted.

Terrelle Pryor, QB, Oakland Raiders: Let’s move on to another situation where we’ll more than likely be seeing a backup quarterback. Pryor is reportedly unlikely to play against the Redskins this weekend, as he’s coming off a concussion suffered in the team’s Week 3 game. That brings Matt Flynn into the conversation; he was taking the main reps in practice yesterday and will be getting the nod on Sunday.
Flynn will get a pretty soft landing against the Washington defense; they’ve been pretty horrible so far. On the flip-side, Redskins fans should hold out some hope for a victory; Flynn hasn’t really impressed during the few occasions he’s been under center for the past year or so.

Chris Ivory, RB, New York Jets: Let’s take a moment to check in on Ivory, who is battling a hamstring injury suffered last weekend against the Bills. He missed practice yesterday, which was his second consecutive missed session. That puts his availability for Sunday’s game against the Titans into serious jeopardy.
With out Ivory, the Jets will once again have to rely on Bilal Powell, who is coming off a career performance (149 rush yards) in Week 3. The Titans have a pretty good rush defense, so this should be a good matchup for fans to follow.
