NFL News: Player News and Updates for 9/26/13

Today’s the day. The NFL’s Week 4 begins tonight, when the Rams and 49ers kick off in St. Louis. In the meantime, there’s plenty of activity happening around the league with injuries, lineup changes and intriguing storylines everywhere. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the newsmakers from the last day or so. Here’s the latest.

What to Watch Tonight: This evening on the NFL Network’s “Thursday Night Football,” we’ll see a divisional battle between two opponents who know each other very well. The Rams will be hosting the 49ers, and this game will carry some heavy implications for both teams. When St. Louis has the ball, their main concern should be keeping QB Sam Bradford upright. The offense avoided giving up sacks in their first two games, and it resulted in five passing touchdowns and at least 24 points in each matchup. Last week against the Cowboys, however, they allowed a half-dozen sacks and could only muster a single score in the blowout.
On the other side, we’re not quite sure what to make of San Francisco QB Colin Kaepernick just yet. He started out the year with a scorching performance against Green Bay, only to follow that up with just 10 points in his next two games combined. The Niners offense needs a lift, and the Rams could provide it. They haven’t lived up to expectations thus far, and have been pelted through the air by opposing quarterbacks.

Freeman Fallout: Yesterday’s big story was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ benching of starting QB Josh Freeman. He’d been struggling this season (and last season, for that matter), with just two touchdowns and three interceptions through three games thus far. To make matters worse, his completion percentage hasn’t been higher than 48.4 in that span, either. Rookie QB Mike Glennon will step in as the starter, so we’ll get our first extended look at him against Arizona on Sunday.
As for Freeman, there’s been some heavy speculation that the team would be very interested in trading him. According to the early indications, however, that may not be possible. There’s reportedly not much interest in his services at the moment, and no good fit for him elsewhere in the league. Injuries can happen any time, though, so we may see a move yet. We’ll keep you posted.

London Calling: The good thing about Sunday’s Steelers-Vikings showdown in London is that someone has to win. We’re not exactly showing England our best products, as both teams head into this one at 0-3. Still, the Brits should be excited about seeing Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson, who has over 100 total yards in each of the three games so far with four touchdowns in all. The Steelers have been getting wrecked by opposing running backs so far this season, so the stage is set for a big day from AP.
For the Steelers, they’ll be pinning their hopes on rookie RB Le’Veon Bell, who could be making his season debut on Sunday. The Pittsburgh running game has been downright brutal thus far, and his presence could serve to give the team a lift. We’ll keep you posted on Bell’s status for the game.

Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans: One notable injury we’ve been watching closely this week belongs to Johnson. He’s been battling a shin injury, and the issue kept him out of practice yesterday. According to the Texans coaching staff, Johnson will be a game-time decision for Sunday at home against Seattle. It’s not a very promising matchup, as the Seahawks defense has suffocated opposing passing games thus far. If Johnson can’t go, it will produce a domino effect that will hurt the other areas of Houston’s offense and make it very difficult to put points on the board.
