NFL Updates: Brown Trade, Gronkowski News and More
October 3, 2013
The NFL kicks back into gear tonight after the usual two-day layoff with a very intriguing Thursday matchup between the Bills and Browns. That should set the table for a very interesting set of games coming up Sunday and Monday as Week 5 continues. While we’re waiting for kickoff, let’s take a look around the league at some of the noteworthy storylines and news-making players out there. Here’s the latest.
Levi Brown Trade: A big trade went down yesterday, and it should serve toward the delight of suffering Pittsburgh fans. The Steelers made a move for Brown yesterday, acquiring him from the Cardinals in exchange for a conditional late-round pick. What Pittsburgh ultimately gives up will depend on how much he ends up playing.
Brown has been an every-week starter for Arizona, but has come under fire recently for his spotty pass protection. The Steelers, however, will likely be happy with any positive addition to their sieve-like offensive line.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, New England Patriots: There’s been a bit of a soap opera playing out in the media over Gronkowski and his alleged squabbling with the team, but according to the man himself, that’s not the case.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the team had been putting pressure on him to take the field, feeling that he was recovered sufficiently from his forearm and back surgeries to be able to play. The report said Gronkowski disagreed, preferring to wait until he felt comfortable enough to take NFL-style hits.
Yesterday, he was quoted as saying that everything is fine between him and the organization, and that they’ve agreed on each phase of his recovery.
Regardless, the endgame will play out when Gronk returns to action, which--if we had to guess--won’t be this week. He was limited in practice again yesterday.
Josh Freeman, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Speaking of unflattering reports emerging, there’s one out there this morning about embattled Bucs QB Josh Freeman. This one says he’s been fined a whopping five times for team violations since the beginning of this year, including two incidents on opening day and three more stemming from last week.
Freeman is appealing the fines, but right now it’s not looking like he’s got much of a case. Here’s the kicker: if he gets fined for one more violation, he would apparently be in danger of being suspended. If that happens, the team would be able to keep him on the roster, yet not have to play his salary.
The team has been trying to trade him, and Freeman has asked for an outright release.
Jags Done Trading: After the Jaguars traded left tackle Eugene Monroe earlier this week, there was some speculation that they’d also be shopping around some of the big names left on their roster while they attempt to blow up the payroll and enter full-on rebuilding mode. The report said even names like Maurice Jones-Drew, Justin Blackmon and Marcedes Lewis would be in play.
According to the latest reports, however, the team has finished attempting trades, and won’t be pursuing any further moves. That’s not to say they wouldn’t act if they heard a stellar offer, but Jags fans shouldn’t be anticipating any other departures.
