The Arizona Cardinals and the Atlanta Falcons face off on Sunday in an NFL matchup of teams who can’t afford too many more losses this season.
The Arizona Cardinals have lost their last two games in a row but with those losses coming to the 49ers and the Seahawks and one of their other losses being to the Saints their 2-4 record looks a little less bad. The Cardinals offense is averaging 19 points and 309.7 yards per game and they have a minus two turnover ratio. Carson Palmer has completed 60.5 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and 13 interceptions and he has been sacked 20 times. Rashard Mendenhall is averaging 3.1 yards per carry and he has three touchdowns and Andre Ellington is averaging 6.4 yards per carry and he has 20 receptions out of the backfield. Larry Fitzgerald leads the Cardinals in receiving with 32 catches and four touchdowns, Michael Floyd has 31 catches, and Andre Roberts has 19 catches. Defensively Arizona allows 23 points and 349.7 yards per game and they have eight interceptions, 19 sacks, and seven fumble recoveries. Karlos Dansby has 62 tackles, Tyrann Mathieu as 42 tackles, Patrick Peterson has three interceptions and Daryl Washington has 17 tackles in just two games and we should see the entire unit improve as he should be worked back in at this point. The Cardinals need to avoid turning the ball over and as inconsistent as Palmer has been he is a big improvement from what we saw at QB in Arizona last season.

The Atlanta Falcons have been playoff regulars over the past several seasons but unless they can get things turned around they may not be in that position this post season. The Falcons offense is averaging 25.5 points and 374.7 yards per game and they are minus two in turnover ratio. Matt Ryan has completed 70.1 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions while being sacked nine times as the Falcons are third in the NFL in passing. Atlanta is 30th in rushing with Jacquizz Rodgers averaging 3.2 yards per carry and he has 25 receptions, Jason Snelling averages 3.6 yards per carry and he has 16 receptions but Steven Jackson could be returning this week after being sidelined since week two. Tony Gonzalez is the Faclsons leading active receiver with 35 catches, Harry Douglas has 23 catches, and Roddy White could be ready to return this week after missing last week’s game. Defensively the Falcons are allowing 26.2 points and 366.3 yards per game with three interceptions, 14 sacks, and four fumble recoveries. William Moore has 34 tackles and Akeem Dent and Robert McClain have 32 tackles. Ryan is having another outstanding year but the Falcons just seem to be missing too much on both sides of the ball.
Arizona is 4-0 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 4-1 against the spread following a loss, and 4-1 against the spread following a double-digit home loss. Atlanta is 15-7-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 1-4-1 against the spread in their last six road games, and 1-4 against the spread following a win.
I have little faith in either of these teams but the Cardinals have the better defense and being home and laying less than a field goal they are the choice.
