The Oakland Raiders and the Pittsburgh Steelers face off on Sunday in a week 8 NFL matchup in Oakland’s Black Hole.
The Oakland Raiders have lost three of their last four games and while it isn’t showing up in the win column they have been competitive in most of their games this season. The Raiders offense has struggled scoring a 29th ranked 17.5 points and gaining 320.8 yards per game including an NFL worst 129.2 yards passing per game. Terrelle Pryor has completed 64.5 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and five interceptions and he has been sacked 20 times. Darren McFadden has once again struggled to stay healthy as he is averaging 3.9 yards per carry scoring two rushing touchdowns and he has caught 16 passes while Rashard Jennings averages 3.9 yards per carry and has 12 receptions. Denarius Moore is the Raiders leading receiver with 25 catches and four touchdowns, Rod Streater has 19 catches, and Mychal Rivera has 12 catches. Defensively the Raiders allow just 22 points and 340 yards per game including just 99 yards per game on the ground and they have three interceptions, 12 sacks, and seven fumble recoveries. Nick Roach leads the Oakland defense with 45 tackles, Kevin Burnett has 43 tackles, and Tracy Porter has 37 tackles. The Raiders are coming off of a bye week and at the time of the season where for most teams the injuries are mounting they have had some time to heal.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got off to a miserable start to the season but now they have won their last two games in a row as they set out to save their season. The Steelers offense is averaging 17.8 points and 329.8 yards per game but they are 27th in the NFL in rushing at 74.3 yards per game and they have a minus 10 turnover ratio. QB Ben Roethlisberger has completed 66.5 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and five interceptions and he has been sacked 21 times. Le’ Veon Bell has been getting the bulk of the carries of late and he is averaging 3.6 yards per carry and he has two touchdowns. Antonio Brown leads the Steelers receivers 47 receptions and two touchdowns, Emmanuel Sanders has 24 catches and a touchdown, and Jerricho Cotchery has 19 catches. Defensively the Steelers allow 22 points and 306 yards per game with two interceptions, eight sacks, and three fumble recoveries. Lawrence Timmons has 51 tackles, Ryan Clark has 43 tackles, and Troy Polamalu has 33 tackles. The Steelers have to avoid turnovers if they are going to have success this season as they just don’t have the sack and turnover numbers defensively to offset their own mistakes.
Oakland is 5-1 against the spread following a loss, 1-9 against the spread following a bye week, and 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 home games against a team with a losing road record. Pittsburgh is 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games, 4-11 against the spread in their last 15 road games, and 1-5 against the spread against a team with a losing record. Pittsburgh has covered the point spread just one time in the last five meetings of these two.
Both of these teams are strong defensively and the offenses aren’t all that strong so the under seems to be a safe play here.
