NFL Updates: Cruz and Reed Done for the Year, Week 16 Schedule and More
December 20, 2013
It’s a little strange this morning not having a Thursday night NFL game to talk about, but it’s a feeling we’ll have to get used to. That said, there are still plenty of interesting topics to cover around the NFL as we head into Week 16. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key players and ongoing storylines out there right now. Here’s the latest.
Jordan Reed, TE, Washington Redskins: We’ve been keeping an eye on Reed over the past few weeks as he’s been dealing with his concussion. It seems we’ve reached an end to the situation, however, as he was shut down for the season after meeting with a specialist yesterday.
It makes sense; Reed has been struggling to shake his concussion symptoms for the past month, and had missed four games because of it. The rookie showed some flashes of brilliance this year, and will be a nice building block for the Redskins moving forward.

Victor Cruz, WR, New York Giants: In a related situation, Cruz was ruled out yesterday for Week 16 against the Lions. He’s been dealing with concussion and knee issues, and met with a doctor to get a second opinion. Shortly afterward, news broke that he had been shut down for the season and has already had an arthroscopic procedure on his knee.
That makes sense; Cruz and the Giants have nothing to play for. He collected 998 yards on 73 catches this year, but hadn’t scored since Week 4.
Calvin Johnson, WR, Detroit Lions: On the other side of the Giants-Lions matchup, we have Johnson. He missed out on practice yesterday due to a knee issue, but the consensus remains that he should be able to play on Sunday since he’s been dealing with the injury for the past couple of weeks.
Even though Johnson put up six grabs for 98 yards against the Ravens last week, it was an overall poor performance, since he dropped a couple of wide-open balls that could have made a huge difference in the game. He’ll be looking for a bounce-back Sunday.
Wes Welker, WR, Denver Broncos: Bad news for the Broncos this morning. According to a report that emerged last night, Welker will be missing another game due to his concussion. He already sat out Week 15 with the ailment.
Though he did some light running and weight training yesterday, Welker missed another day of practice, which adds further credence to the speculation that he’ll be out against the Texans on Sunday. That said, we’d imagine that Denver has more than enough weapons to keep up with Houston’s woeful offense that’s firmly entrenched in phone-it-in mode.
NFL Week 16 Schedule: There are lots of pretty good-looking matchups ahead in Week 16, so it should be another good weekend of football as the playoff-bound teams jockey for position in the standings. Here’s a look at the full schedule, along with the start times and TV networks carrying the games.
