NFL Updates: Romo's Injury, Playoff Standings, Week 17 Schedule and More
December 24, 2013
Now that Week 16 is all wrapped up, we can start looking forward to the final week of the season in the NFL. We’ve got some interesting playoff scenarios ahead, and there are several spots still in question as we finish off the year. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy names and storylines around the league this morning. Here’s the latest.
Romo Done for the Year: We’d be remiss if we didn’t jump right in with the biggest NFL topic in recent weeks. Late yesterday afternoon, a report surfaced that claimed Cowboys QB Tony Romo had been ruled out for the rest of the year with a herniated disc in his back, a condition he aggravated in Week 16 against the Redskins. According to the report, he’ll need surgery and won’t be able to return to the field this season.
That said, the Cowboys (or Jason Garrett anyway) aren’t ruling Romo out for Week 17 just yet. Still, we’d be extremely surprised if anyone other than Kyle Orton is under center for Dallas in their winner-take-all matchup against the Eagles on Sunday.

Falcons-49ers Notes: Candlestick Park saw its last regular-season game last night, and the 49ers gave it a fitting sendoff. They clinched a playoff berth with a 34-24 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, and are still in contention for a division title and No. 1 seed in the NFC.
The game had plenty of drama, as the outcome was in doubt all the way up until NaVorro Bowman’s huge pick-6 that sealed the game. Statistically, Frank Gore (97 rush yards; TD) and Michael Crabtree (102 receiving yards) were a couple of the standouts.
NFL Playoff Picture: Now that we’ve got a clear(er) picture of the playoff race heading into Week 17, let’s take a closer look at the current standings in each conference. Lots of teams have clinched at least a berth already, while those on the outside looking in will need a victory and some help. Here’s how things look right now.
1. Denver Broncos 12-3 (Clinched AFC West)
2. New England Patriots 11-4 (Clinched AFC East)
3. Cincinnati Bengals 10-5 (Clinched AFC North)
4. Indianapolis Colts 10-5 (Clinched AFC South)
