NFL Updates: Rodgers is Back, Week 17 Schedule and More
December 27, 2013
Just a couple more days until the Week 17 festivities begin in the NFL, so the anticipation is running high. There are several key matchups happening on Sunday, and their outcomes will determine who we’ll be seeing in the playoffs this season. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players and storylines out there right now. Here’s the latest.
Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints: Brees and the gang have a big game coming up Sunday against the Buccaneers. The good news for Saints fans is that the team is playing at home, where they’re abnormally better than on the road. Take Brees’ stats in the last four games for instance: The team has played three road games and one in New Orleans in that stretch, winning only the one at home. In the losses, Brees passed for a combined three touchdowns and four interceptions, compared to four scores and zero picks in the win.
Last time he played Tampa Bay, Brees ended up with just one TD and two interceptions in a 16-14 victory. Given the recent trends, however, we’re much more confident about the Saints’ chances this weekend.

Andrew Luck, QB, Indianapolis Colts: While we’re on the subject of quarterbacks this morning, let’s head to Indianapolis and check out Luck. He’ll be facing the Jaguars at home on Sunday, which bodes pretty well for a solid statistical outing. Last time these two teams faced off, the Colts ran away with a 37-3 victory. Luck didn’t have to do much in that game, accounting for a pair of touchdowns and an interception.
He does come into this one with a little something to prove, however. He’s only passed for more than two touchdowns once in the last seven games, and that was in a blowout loss to Cincinnati. Luck will get more field time on Sunday than some might expect: If the Colts win and the Bengals and Patriots lose, they’ll secure a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers: Let’s make it a QB trio today and check in on Rodgers. Packers coach Mike McCarthy shocked the sports world when he announced yesterday that Rodgers would be starting in Sunday’s winner-take-all NFC North matchup against Chicago. He’s been practicing recently, but hadn’t seemed like he was realistically close to a return throughout the past few weeks. With the division title and a trip to the playoffs on the line, however, the Packers brass has apparently decided that it’s worth the risk.
With Rodgers back at the helm, the Chicago-Green Bay game gets a lot more interesting. He’s easily capable of keeping up with the dynamic Bears offense, so we should see a fairly high-scoring, entertaining game.
NFL Week 17 Schedule: The Week 17 action will be coming fast and furious this Sunday, so if your team’s not bound for the playoffs, you’ll need to bid them farewell over the next few days. Here’s the complete schedule, along with the start times and TV networks carrying the games.
