NFL Updates: Nicks, Peterson, Complete Playoffs Schedule and More
January 20, 2014
With the conclusion of yesterday’s AFC and NFC Championship games, the Super Bowl matchup is set (Broncos vs. Seahawks), and we’ve got two full weeks of speculation and conversation before the big game. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy happenings around the league and see what everyone’s up to. Here’s the latest.
Jeremy Maclin, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: Could we be seeing Maclin in a Chiefs uniform in 2014? According to some rumblings out there in KC, it’s a distinct possibility. Here’s the situation: Maclin will be a free agent this off-season and is coming off a missed year after tearing his ACL in the preseason. Given the injury issue, there probably won’t be too many teams actively pursuing him.
That said, KC coach Andy Reid drafted Maclin and has some history with him. The Chiefs could use some help at WR and an incentive-laden one-year deal could make a whole lot of sense. Still, the Eagles will probably make a significant play for Maclin as well, so it could come down to who’s willing to extend the better offer. We’ll keep you posted as the situation develops.

Hakeem Nicks, WR, New York Giants: Let’s stick with the NFC East--and with the WR position--and head up to New York to take a look at Nicks. He’s expected to hit free agency this off-season, as the team is reportedly not interested in retaining him.
Nicks had a pretty disappointing year, especially by his standards. He had 56 receptions for 896 yards and no touchdowns. It’s the first time in his five-year NFL career that he’s failed to score.
Any teams interested in Nicks will have to take a hard look at his disciplinary history. He was fined multiple times for being late to team activities (treatment sessions and meetings) and will be a handful for any perspective new home. Still, given his ceiling, he’ll catch on somewhere. Look for a relatively short contract until he can prove his off-the-field issues are over.
Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings: This week will be a very important one for Peterson. He’s scheduled to meet with a surgeon in Philadelphia to assess his options regarding his nagging groin injury. He reportedly could end up going under the knife to correct the problem this off-season.
Peterson’s groin kept him out of action for two of the Vikings’ last three games. He also fought a foot injury this past season, so it wasn’t a good campaign for him on the injury front. Still, he managed to rack up 279 rush attempts for 1266 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 14 games but it was a far cry from his near-record-breaking 2097 yards in 2012.
NFL Playoffs Schedule and Key Dates: There’s just one more (meaningful) game left in the NFL season, and after that it’s back to anticipation mode for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the schedule and scores from previous rounds, along with a few important upcoming dates we’ll be seeing soon.
