NFL Updates: Eagles and Jets' Potential Moves, Complete Playoffs Schedule and More
January 24, 2014
Just a couple more days left until the NFL’s Pro Bowl, which marks the final league activity before the Super Bowl on Feb. 2. We’ve still got plenty of time to dissect the big game, and in the meantime there are plenty of topics to address elsewhere in the league as well. With that said, let’s take a look at who’s making headlines this morning.
Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings: It’s been a whirlwind week for Peterson. First, it was announced Wednesday that he’d opted for surgery to correct his nagging groin injury, then the actual procedure took place yesterday. His recovery timeline is anticipated to be 4-6 weeks, so he should be A-OK in plenty of time for all the team’s off-season activities.
Even with the groin injury, Peterson was able to amass 1,266 yards in just 14 games this past season. At the advanced age of 29, he’s a good bet to surpass those numbers in 2014 going into the season healthy.

Torrey Smith, WR, Baltimore Ravens: Smith may have more than training to occupy himself this off-season. Sources close to the team anticipate the Ravens might try to work out a contract extension with the dynamic WR before the 2014 campaign begins. As of now, he’s got one year left on his rookie deal.
Smith has emerged as a key part of the Baltimore offense, and is coming off a 65-catch, 1,128-yard season in 2013. That said, the Ravens will have to do some creative maneuvering to get his new deal in under the salary cap.
Santonio Holmes, WR, New York Jets: Long-suffering Jets fans can find some solace in the team’s anticipated off-season moves. First on the agenda will be cutting ties with troubled wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who has provided diminishing returns and hurt team chemistry since joining the Jets. Cutting him would save $8.25 million in cap money, which New York can use to re-sign players and dip into the free agent market.
Also on the chopping block are Mark Sanchez and Antonio Cromartie. Sanchez’s days as a Jet are over, but Cromartie could end up coming back to the team.
Now that they have some money to burn and draft picks to play with, a few shrewd moves could put the Jets back into contention in the AFC East.
Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: There’s been some intense speculation recently as far as what the Eagles will be doing with their receiving corps this off-season. One theory that makes sense to us is signing Maclin to a one-year “prove-it” deal. He’s coming off an ACL injury that kept him out the entire year, and is expected to be open to a short, demonstrative contract.
On the other hand, Cooper isn’t expected to return to the team. He played above his abilities for most of the year, racking up 835 yards and eight scores. He’ll likely hit the free agent market and make some big money that Philly won’t be willing to pay.
NFL Playoffs Schedule and Key Dates: There’s just one more (meaningful) game left in the NFL season, and after that it’s back to anticipation mode for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the schedule and scores from previous rounds, along with a few important upcoming dates we’ll be seeing soon.
