NFL Updates: Harvin Cleared for Super Bowl, Important 2014 Dates and More
January 25, 2014
Just one more day left until we can get our NFL fixes again…even if it is just the Pro Bowl. That said, we’re one day closer to the final game of the season, and after that it’ll be full speed ahead to the 2014 campaign. Let’s take a closer look at some of the notable players and storylines happening around the league right now. Here’s the latest.
Heath Miller, TE, Pittsburgh Steelers: One of the things on the Steelers’ to-do list this off-season will likely be extending veteran TE Heath Miller. Statistically speaking, he had a down-year, with just one touchdown and 593 yards on 58 receptions. That said, he did show sparks of his old self in 2013 after coming off a major knee injury, so that’s something to be optimistic about.
Miller has remained one of the most reliable offensive contributors during his nine-year career with the Steelers, and with his contract set to expire after 2014, an extension is likely in the cards.

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers: Let’s stick with the Steelers for a moment and check in on Bell. After tallying 860 rush yards in 13 games during his rookie campaign, word around the team is that he’ll be taking a big step forward in 2014.
The reason for the optimism is due to Pittsburgh’s new offensive line coach Mike Munchak. He’s expected to be installing a new zone-blocking scheme up front, which should shore up some of the difficulties the Steelers had in that area last season. With a few tweaks and a fresh set of healthy bodies on the O-line, there’s reason to believe in Pittsburgh’s running game this year.
David Wilson, RB, New York Giants: Wilson’s NFL future is still as cloudy as ever, but we continue to get encouraging news about his recovery from neck surgery (herniated disc). Yesterday he announced that he’s out of his brace, a week after the procedure.
That’s a good sign, but there are still a lot of hurdles for Wilson to clear before he can even make it back on the field again. He has to recover fully, then get clearance to play before he can suit up for 2014. This will be an ongoing storyline as the off-season progresses, so we’ll keep you posted.
Percy Harvin, WR, Seattle Seahawks: To the delight of Seahawks fans everywhere, Harvin officially received clearance to play in the Super Bowl yesterday. That means he passed the league’s mandated concussion protocols and has recovered from his Divisional-Round injury against the Saints.
Despite the fact that Harvin played in just one regular season game for the Seahawks, his addition to the roster is an enormous boost to the Seahawks. His presence will provide the Seattle offense with a dynamic and formidable weapon in both the passing and return games, and adds an extra wrinkle to their game-planning strategy. Expect to see some creative scenarios for Harvin in the big game.
NFL Playoffs and Key Dates: There’s just one more (meaningful) game left in the NFL season, and after that it’s back to anticipation mode for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the remaining schedule, along with a few important upcoming dates we’ll be seeing soon.
