NFL Updates: Cassel, Eagles, Off-Season Schedule and More

The NFL off-season continues to chug along, and even though the games have stopped for a while, the news and developments haven’t. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the news-making players and situations out there and see what everyone’s up to. Here’s the latest.

Eagles WR Situation: One interesting storyline out of Philadelphia this off-season will be their decisions at the WR position. Here’s essentially how it breaks down: Both Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin will be hitting free agency in the coming weeks, and even though the team could potentially re-sign both players, it’s been speculated that they’ll let at least one walk.
We’re betting the team will decline to retain Cooper, who is coming off a much-improved season and will likely garner inflated numbers in the open market. He posted 835 yards and eight touchdowns through the air this year, which will get a lot of deep-pocketed teams’ attention.
We’d also imagine the Eagles will address the WR position in the draft, as there are a lot of pretty good young names out there. That said, anything could happen between now and then, and word is that the team will start talking with Cooper about a potential deal when the NFL Combine rolls around.

Kirk Cousins, QB, Washington Redskins: Maybe that marriage between Cousins and the Browns isn’t such a foregone conclusion after all. According to some new reports that emerged yesterday, Cleveland isn’t interested in trading for the Redskins backup QB, and they’d prefer to roll with Brian Hoyer, who will be coming back healthy in 2014 after suffering a knee injury last season.
Cousins’ ties with new Browns OC Kyle Shanahan led some to speculate the team would make a run for him, but apparently that’s not happening. Even with Cleveland out, there’s still a market for his services, however, so we don’t expect him to remain with the ‘Skins much longer.

Matt Cassel, QB, Minnesota Vikings: While we’re on the subject of quarterbacks who will potentially be changing addresses this off-season, let’s take a look at Cassel. As of late yesterday, he voided his contract with the Vikings, making him an official free agent (the deadline for doing so was Friday).
In pulling that move, he’ll leave $3.7 million on the table with Minnesota. That sounds like a bad business decision, but given the low-level free agency class at QB this season, Cassel could end up pulling a bigger payday somewhere else. As a matter of fact, the Houston Texans have been mentioned as a likely destination for him, which isn't too hard to imagine. Ironically, Cassel could also come back to the Vikings (Christian Ponder is the only QB on their roster right now) at a higher salary.
