NFL Updates: Garcon and Griffin, Off-Season Schedule and More
February 7, 2014
The Super Bowl just ended a few days ago, and we’re already seeing some significant developments around the NFL that will impact the upcoming year. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the noteworthy players out there who are making headlines right now. Here’s the latest.
Pierre Garcon, WR, Washington Redskins: This is encouraging news for ‘Skins fans. Garcon has said he’ll be working out with QB Robert Griffin III this off-season, likely in an effort to bolster their chemistry and ultimately improve the team’s passing attack. They’ll be on a tour of sorts, with workouts planned in Arizona and possibly Virginia, Baylor and Miami.
As the Redskins’ star receiver, Garcon had a good year statistically. He put up 113 receptions for 1346 yards but only had five touchdowns. If Griffin can get back to his old self this off-season (he was hampered by not having any downtime between his knee injury comeback and the 2013 campaign), we could see a repeat of those solid receiving numbers in an improved passing attack.

Anquan Boldin, WR, San Francisco 49ers: Let’s head over to the other coast and check out Boldin, who will reportedly figure heavily into the Niners’ off-season plans. San Francisco is likely the most appealing destination for the free-agent-to-be, and sources close to the team expect him to sign back up there for a suggested two-year deal in the neighborhood of $10 million.
A scenario like that makes sense; Boldin is almost 34 years old and won’t be as much of a priority elsewhere in the league. With San Francisco, he’ll be the team’s No. 2 WR option opposite Michael Crabtree. The team is also expected to retain Quinton Patton as the No. 3 guy, and also visit the position in the draft--probably with a relatively high pick.
Jermichael Finley, TE, Green Bay Packers: There are about a million variables involved in Finley’s potential off-season timeline. He’s still recovering from a scary neck injury in 2013 which resulted in spine-fusion surgery. Finley also has the very important hurdle of being cleared for contact by a doctor before he can even step on a football field again.
If all that goes well and he’s able to play in 2014, there’s still the matter of where he’ll be calling home. Finley has said he’d like to remain with the Packers, but we wouldn’t expect the team to make any moves until he gets that all-important clearance.
Assuming Green Bay doesn’t make an offer agreeable to Finley, he’ll still likely garner interest elsewhere if he’s healthy. The New York Giants have been mentioned as a potential suitor, thanks to his relationship with OC Ben McAdoo, who was a TE coach with the Packers.
Needless to say, there are a lot of possibilities out there for Finley’s potential future. We won’t know anything until he gets clearance for contact, and his camp is confident that will happen within the next few weeks.
