NFL Updates: Alexander, Jets, Jags, Off-Season Schedule and More
February 8, 2014
As we cruise into our first football-less weekend since the opening of the 2013 NFL season, there are still plenty of news items out there that will be impacting the upcoming campaign. It’s still a long way away, but there should be plenty of developments that keep us occupied until then. With that in mind, let’s take a look at a few of the players who are making headlines out there. Here’s the latest.
Jaguars Tweaks: We got a few news items on the Jaguars yesterday, most having to do with some possible changes to their roster in the upcoming campaign. First we’ll start off with RB Denard Robinson, who is coming off a pretty disappointing rookie year with just 20 carries for 66 yards. Even with the low production totals, the team seems optimistic about keeping him around. The indications are that he’ll have to put on a little weight in the off-season if he wants to carry a heavier load in the offense. The team is possibly looking at letting Maurice Jones-Drew go in free agency, so if that’s the plan they’ll likely end up visiting the RB position in the draft.
Then there’s Ace Sanders--who was a favorite in this space last season due to his ultra-cool name. The team has big plans for him, even going so far as to say think he can be a “Darren Sproles-type” player. That comparison isn’t too far off, as Sanders definitely has the physical gifts to excel in that role. He caught 51 balls for 484 yards last year.

Jets WR Possibilities: Prepare yourself to hear a ton of talk about the Jets’ free agency needs and interests over the next month, because they’re likely to be courting just about every decent wide receiver on the market. The latest names tied to Gang Green are Pittsburgh’s Emmanuel Sanders and Philadelphia’s Jeremy Maclin, both of whom the Jets are reportedly coveting in a major way. This news comes after New York’s reported interest in Eric Decker, who will also be in the mix as a possible free agent add.
The Jets have the tools for a reload this off-season, with a plethora of draft picks and--once they cut Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes--plenty of cap space. Wide receiver is a glaring are of need, as the team ranked 31st in passing last season and will be left with the blah WR roster of David Nelson, Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill.
Danario Alexander, WR, San Diego Chargers: Alexander’s cloudy NFL future just became a little more overcast. Yesterday it was revealed that he’d undergone a second procedure on his injured ACL last month. This surgery was reportedly a “revision” and could hold him out during the opening period of training camp.
If Alexander is able to make it back onto the football field this season, it’s difficult telling what the circumstances will be. He’s reportedly not likely to return to San Diego, so if he can get himself right he may land an incentives-laden deal somewhere desperate for playmaking bodies.
That said, Alexander is a risky investment regardless of how you look at it. He’s now had two surgeries on his right knee and five on his left, calling his NFL future into serious doubt.
