As we continue to leave the 2013 NFL season in the rearview mirror, we’re seeing more and more developments around the league. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at some of the noteworthy players out there and see what everyone’s up to. Here’s the latest.

Niners Franchise Tag: The scenario has been tossed out there multiple times this off-season already, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. San Francisco isn’t expected to use its franchise designation, thanks largely to financial circumstances.
Candidates for the tag included WR Anquan Boldin and safety Donte Whitner, but here’s how the money breaks down: Boldin would likely cost $11.5 million to tag, and Whitner $8 million--more than the team cares to spend on either player.

Turbin Vs. Michael: Here’s an interesting battle to keep your eyes on in the weeks leading up to the 2014 season. We’re expected to see some hefty training camp competition between Seahawks RBs Robert Turbin and Christine Michael, who each will try to earn the backup spot behind veteran starter Marshawn Lynch.
The No. 2 job is gaining importance in Seattle, as Lynch has been a workhorse for quite some time (he had over 400 touches last season). Turbin seems to have the inside track at the moment--he’s great as a blocker and got the backup nod in crunch time last season.
Still, Michael could have a higher ceiling as a runner; He’s got that all-important burst that could earn him big touches next season.

Kellen Winslow, TE, New York Jets: By many accounts out there, Winslow may have played his last down in the NFL. The Jets aren’t expected to re-sign him in 2014, and if you count his off-the-field problems (synthetic marijuana possession charges, alleged lewd behavior) along with his injury issues (bad knees), he’s a long shot to catch on anywhere at all.
Winslow had 31 catches for 388 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games with New York this past season.

DeMarcus Ware, DE, Dallas Cowboys: We’ll finish up today by visiting with Ware, who will be going under the knife next Tuesday. He’s scheduled to undergo surgery to fix a nerve in his right elbow, which has been giving him pain and irritation for quite some time.
This has been an issue for Ware over the last two seasons, so it’s good to hear that he’s finally getting it corrected. He’s not anticipated to miss any of the Cowboys’ off-season activities.

NFL Key Dates: Now that we’ve finished up the season in the NFL, it’s now back to anticipation mode for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at some of the noteworthy dates from this off-season period that should keep us occupied until the league kicks off again.
