NFL Updates: Cousins, Patterson, Off-Season Schedule and More
February 15, 2014
We’ve reached another off-season weekend in the NFL, and we’re inching closer to the next red-letter dates on the calendar. The NFL combine will begin in just four days, so we’ll get to see a glimpse of the new class of recruits ready to join the pro ranks. In the meantime, let’s take our daily look across the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Minnesota Vikings: We saw glimpses of how potentially dominating Patterson could be this past season, especially as the year was beginning to wind down. He finished with 15 receptions for 215 yards and three touchdowns in just his last four games, hinting at his potential as he moves on to his second year in the NFL.
There’s a lot of hopeful buzz surrounding Patterson this off-season, and much of that comes due to new offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who helped turn Josh Gordon into a superstar in Cleveland last year.
The major question mark still lingering in this equation is the Vikings’ QB situation. They’ve still got Christian Ponder, but are expected to be players in the draft and free agent market when it comes to signal-callers. We’ll keep checking in on this situation as it develops.

Josh McCown, QB, Chicago Bears: Speaking of free agent quarterbacks, McCown will be a hotly-discussed topic before he signs his next deal. The latest buzz on him surrounds the Raiders (his former team), who are reportedly interested in pursuing him via free agency. McCown played for Oakland way back in 2007, posting mixed results of 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
For the record, McCown has said that he would like to remain with the Bears, but that could be just posturing. He’ll definitely draw some interest thanks to his solid play backing up Jay Cutler this past year, posting 13 touchdowns and one interception in five starts.
Kirk Cousins, QB, Washington Redskins: While we’re on the subject of QBs, let’s visit Cousins. He made news yesterday when it was announced that he’d undergone Lasik surgery to improve his eyesight. He’d previously had to fuss with contacts, but after this procedure--which is pretty common in sports--he’ll have normal vision.
Cousins anticipates the surgery will aid his peripheral eyesight and help him evade blitzes. New information like that should only serve to increase his desirability on the trade market and will probably get him a new home by the 2014 season.
Patriots Receiving Corps: Let’s cruise on over to the AFC East and check out the Patriots, who could have a very different-looking receiving corps in this upcoming year. Sources close to the team have speculated that New England’s biggest concern will be deciding whether or not to pay Julian Edelman, who will be a free agent. The team may not be willing to give him what he’s asking for money-wise, so we could see him somewhere else.
The team is also expected to kick the tires on a few players in free agency--likely top-tier names if Edelman walks, or lower-ranked players if he stays.
Also, if the Patriots want to run at maximum efficiency in an improving division, they’ll need healthy and productive seasons from the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins.
