NFL Updates: Ray Rice Arrest, Boldin Contract, Off-Season Schedule and More
February 17, 2014
We’re one day closer to the NFL combine, which will kick off this week. That’s a big off-season date, as we’ll be getting a closer look at some of the big-name rookies who will be making headlines during the draft in May. While we’re waiting, let’s take our daily look around the league at some of the noteworthy happenings out there. Here’s the latest.
Jeremy Maclin, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: We’ve been checking out the impending free agent WR market over the past couple of weeks, and Maclin has been a frequent topic of conversation. His name has been linked to the likes of the Jets, Patriots, Chiefs, and a few others, but those teams may not even get a chance to make an offer.
Maclin reiterated his desire to stay with the Eagles this weekend, saying that things were going to “work out” and that Philly was where he wanted to be. That said, there’s been much speculation this off-season that the Eagles might not bother making too much fuss over Maclin in free agency, thanks to the fact that he’s coming off an ACL injury that cost him the entire season.
Needless to say, this situation is sure to get more interesting as the free agent period looms closer. Stay tuned.

John Carlson, TE, Minnesota Vikings: Carlson hasn’t gotten the chance to replicate the success he had in Seattle with the Vikings over the past couple of years, but he’ll get at least one more chance to try. He announced this weekend that he was planning on returning for another year in 2014, after a season cut short by a concussion--his third known during his NFL stint.
Carlson had been considering retirement, but the lure of the field--not to mention the $3.9 million paycheck--proved to be too enticing. He’ll be the No. 2 TE to Kyle Rudolph.
Rice Arrested: The Ravens’ Ray Rice got himself into some legal trouble and bad PR yesterday morning, as he was arrested on a domestic violence charge inside a casino in Atlantic City. He and his fiancée reportedly got into an altercation (she was arrested too) but returned home together after being detained.
Rice hasn’t been known for off-the-field incidents, so this comes as something of a surprise. We’ll have to wait and see what comes of the arrest and charges, but it’s certainly no good for his image in an off-season where he needs to focus on his comeback.
Anquan Boldin, WR, San Francisco 49ers: If everything goes well, it’s looking like Boldin will be staying with the Niners for the foreseeable future. The two sides are reportedly in heavy negotiations concerning a multi-year contract extension, which confirms the fact that San Francisco considered him an off-season priority.
Word is that the contract may end up in the two-year, $10-million range, so Boldin should end up being with the club for at least a couple more seasons.
