NFL Updates: Seahawks Moves, Lions, Off-Season Schedule and More

The NFL Combine gets kicked off today, and over the next few days we’ll be getting a closer look at all the top players in the incoming draft class. That said, there’s plenty going on elsewhere in the league as well, so let’s take our daily look around the NFL and see which names are making headlines this morning. Here’s the latest.

Zach Miller, TE, Seattle Seahawks: Has Miller seen his last snap in Seattle? It’s certainly a possibility, given the speculation from some of those covering the team. Here’s the scenario: Miller is set to cost the Seahawks $5 million against the cap next year on a $7 million salary, which doesn’t make a whole lot of financial sense given the fact that he’s not a very big contributor to their offense.
Miller posted 33 catches for 387 yards with five scores in Seattle’s 2013 Super Bowl season. If he is indeed released, he shouldn’t have a whole lot of trouble catching on somewhere else. Luke Wilson would likely get the starting job if he goes.

Sidney Rice, WR, Seattle Seahawks: Let’s stick with the Super Bowl champs for a moment and check out Rice, who is in much the same boat as Miller. The eight-year veteran WR is set to make at least $8.5 million in 2014, and if the Seahawks cut him they could save $7.3 million against the salary cap. Seattle isn’t quite in dire financial straits just yet, but they will be if they don’t start trimming some salary, and this is a prime place to do it.
Rice could always renegotiate his deal and stay, but cutting him seems just as likely a scenario. He’s an injury liability and not too huge of a producer, posting 15 receptions for 231 yards and three touchdowns in a shortened eight-game campaign (ACL) last season.

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Detroit Lions: Pettigrew has made some headlines this off-season, given the fact that his coaching staff has expressed a desire to retain his services. He’ll be a free agent if the team sits on its hands, but there’s growing speculation that the Lions could use the franchise tag on him.
If they do indeed franchise Pettigrew, he’ll get $6.8 million guaranteed for the upcoming season. Although he posted just 41 catches for 416 yards and two scores, the Lions feel they’d get their money’s worth due to his skills as a blocker.

Roddy White, WR, Atlanta Falcons: Here’s an odd story out of Atlanta. Early yesterday morning, White was arrested in Georgia on a failure to appear warrant. He only stayed about 90 minutes, posting a $168 bond.
White’s arrest stems from his alleged failure to attend a court hearing on a traffic charge. His charge was apparently for having non-transparent material on his vehicle’s windows--which just sounds like a fancy way of saying his window tint was too dark.
