NFL Updates: Johnson, Romo, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 10, 2014
We’ve begun another workweek anew, and with tomorrow’s official beginning to the 2014 NFL league year, the anticipation is running high once again. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at the headlines from around the league and see who’s in the news this morning. Here’s the latest.
Everson Griffen, DE, Minnesota Vikings: We’d be remiss if we didn’t examine yesterday’s signing of Griffin and its potential impact on the free agent market. The four-year veteran managed to snag a five-year contract extension with Minnesota worth $42.5 million dollars. That’s an enormous deal for him, and starts out what’s expected to be a very lucrative free agent period for pass rushers.
The Vikings were likely desperate to retain Griffen, as they’re expected to lose fellow DE Jared Allen to free agency--hence the perceived overpayment. He’s going to be an every-down player now, even though he’s only started one game in his career. That said, Griffen has some heavy potential and should do well in a feature role.

Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos: Now let’s check in on the free agent RB class by visiting with Moreno. He may be in a little trouble on the open market, as a report came out over the weekend that described the running back market as basically nonexistent. Ben Tate and Darren McFadden are projected to be the most coveted names out there at RB, but with their injury histories they may have issues commanding healthy salaries.
So where does that leave Moreno? Well, by most indications, he probably won’t get what he wants on the open market, simply because it’s easy to replace running backs these days. That leaves open the possibility of him returning to Denver, but the team seems like they’re committed to moving on without him, so that likely won’t happen. Stay tuned.
Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys: Let’s take a break from the free agent talk for a moment and check in on Romo. He’s currently rehabbing from his back surgery, and recently said the process was going “good.” By all indications, he should be recovered in time to be able to participate in organized team activities next month.
Romo had surgery in December to correct a herniated disc and hasn’t had any setbacks since then. This off-season, it’s been said that he recognizes his team’s need to win now, and should hit the 2014 with a renewed sense of urgency. We’ll see how he looks on the field in a few months.
Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans: Here’s an interesting report out of Tennessee. The Titans will reportedly be shopping Johnson around the league this off-season to see if anyone is interested in a trade. If they can’t find a partner, we could see Johnson cut from the team.
Johnson has managed to tally over 1,000 yards in each of his six years in the NFL. That said, his production has declined steadily in the past few seasons, which has put a serious financial strain on the Titans.
