NFL Updates: Holmes, Trade Rumors, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 11, 2014
Today’s a big day in the NFL. The league year officially begins this afternoon, which means we’ll likely be seeing a flurry of free agent signing activity. Before the onslaught of information officially begins, let’s take a look at a few players who are making headlines right now. Here’s the latest.
Dexter McCluster, WR, Free Agent: Yesterday afternoon, it was reported that McCluster won’t be re-signing with the Chiefs and would be weighing his options with his “four or five” other interested teams. It won’t take long to get a deal done, as he’s expected to sign with one of them by tonight.
In all honesty, getting out of Kansas City is probably the best thing for McCluster at this point. The team really wasn’t able to make good use of him on offense, and he only really shined in the return game. We’ll see if another team can utilize him effectively as a WR.

Michael Bennett, DE, Seattle Seahawks: Suddenly the Vikings are looking pretty smart. The free-agent DE market got a lot slimmer yesterday when Bennett re-signed with the Seahawks for four years at $28.5 million ($16 million guaranteed). The announcement was a little surprising, as the Bears were in hot pursuit of him and offered up quite a bit more dough.
Bennett should continue to shine in the Seahawks’ rotation-style scheme and is in for another big year in Seattle. As for Chicago, they’ll have to take a stab at the remaining pass-rushers out there.
Santonio Holmes, WR, Free Agent: It’s been talked about for months, and it finally happened yesterday afternoon. The Jets released embattled WR Holmes, a move that makes sense not only from a financial standpoint (the team will clear $8.25 million in cap space without him on the roster), but also works toward restoring some chemistry and balance to the locker room.
With Antonio Cromartie and now Holmes gone, the Jets are only stuck with the bloated contract of former starting QB Mark Sanchez. Much of what happens with him will depend on if New York can find an interested free agent QB (and if they can bring him back at a reduced salary). We’ll keep an eye on the situation as it develops.
Trade Rumors: Let’s take a quick peek around the league and examine a few players who are currently being shopped around as potential trade bait. First off, there’s Darrelle Revis in Tampa Bay. The former Jets star is due a $1.5 million dollar roster bonus tomorrow, and if he’s still on the team by then the Bucs’ conditional pick involved in the trade moves up from a fourth to a third. If they don’t trade him, they could still cut him and rework things in order to avoid that draft hit.
There’s also Julius Peppers in Chicago. He’ll count $18.2 million against the cap this year, but if the Bears can’t trade him (which they probably won’t be able to), he’ll likely get cut.
Steve Smith is also being shopped around in Carolina. There are a few things working against a deal, namely his $7 million cap hit and his age (34).
