NFL Updates: Jets Land Decker, Daniels and the Pack, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 13, 2014
With free agency in full swing, the NFL has been the talk of the sports world this week. The signings and rumors will be continuing today, as we’ll be seeing another round of transactions across the league. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at the headlines out there. Here’s the latest.
Josh McCown, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Love Smith has been making lots of waves on the Bucs’ roster since joining up in the off-season. Yesterday, the team signed their potential starting quarterback in former Bear Josh McCown, who inked a two-year deal worth $4.75 million in 2014 and $5.25 million next season as base salary (he can earn an additional $5 million in incentives).
McCown will now be in legitimate competition with incumbent QB Mike Glennon to land the starting job when the season opens (though we'd imagine McCown will start the preseason with the advantage). It should be an interesting situation to watch as the opener draws closer.

DeMarcus Ware, DE, Denver Broncos: Well, that didn’t take long. After getting cut by the Cowboys earlier this week, Ware inked a deal with the Broncos yesterday. The contract is for three years at $30 million dollars ($20 million guaranteed).
Ware’s tenure in Dallas came to an end due to the team’s cap constraints. He’s the franchise leader in sacks, with 117 in his career. He’ll join a Broncos defense that has taken several key steps forward (Aqib Talib, T.J. Ward, etc.) in this off-season campaign.
Owen Daniels, TE, Free Agent: Since he was officially released on Tuesday, Daniels has made some news on the open market. He’s been linked to the Ravens (they’re reportedly interested in acquiring him) and was visiting with the Packers yesterday.
Green Bay makes sense as a potential landing spot for Daniels. The team will be down a couple of weapons with Jermichael Finley and Andrew Quarless hitting free agency this off-season.
Daniels is coming off a five-game season during which he posted 24 grabs, 252 yards and three touchdowns. His season was shortened due to a broken leg.
Eric Decker, WR, New York Jets: Last night, it was announced that the Jets had pulled off one of the biggest signings of the free agency period. Decker will reportedly be joining the team in New York, though the exact terms of the deal haven’t been formally announced just yet. (It’s reportedly a five-year deal worth $36.25 million.)
The Jets sorely needed a wide receiver, and signing Decker is a great start. (They’d otherwise been pretty quiet in free agency signings thus far.) Now that Darrelle Revis is a Patriot, these two will go at each other at least twice this year. As for the Jets, their next position to address is the QB slot, so we’ll see what they do there.
