NFL Updates: Smith, Britt, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 14, 2014
We’ve seen some crazy happenings this week as the NFL free agency period hits its stride. There are plenty more signings to come as the big names drop off the board, then it’ll be time to look forward to the draft in May. That said, here’s a look at some of the headlines from around the league this morning.
Darren Sproles, RB, Philadelphia Eagles: Before we get going this morning, we’ve got to discuss yesterday’s blockbuster trade that sent Sproles to the Eagles. Philly got the dynamic RB at the bargain-basement price of a fifth-round pick, which seems like nothing short of a steal to us. (And to sweeten the pot, the Eagles swiped him right out from underneath their division rival Redskins, who also were said to be interested.)
Sproles will be a spectacular fit in Philadelphia’s new up-tempo offense. He’ll provide a potent complement to LeSean McCoy, and both players will thrive in the open-field play style that the Eagles showcased last season.

Kenny Britt, WR, Free Agent: Even though Britt had a pretty awful year with the Titans in 2013 (11 receptions, 96 yards), he’s still apparently got a pretty strong presence in the free agent market. There have been four or five teams rumored to have interest in the six-year veteran, with the Redskins and possibly the Rams or Patriots said to be kicking the tires.
Britt is coming off an ACL injury, and has gone through a myriad of off-the-field issues in his NFL campaign. He’d likely find his best fit with a high-character team like New England, but would benefit from a change in scenery regardless.
Sidney Rice, WR, Free Agent: Now let’s move on to another WR out there on the market. Rice’s time in Seattle may not be finished quite yet, as there’s a report out there this morning saying the team is interested in reacquiring him.
Rice was cut from the team in an effort to shave $7.3 million dollars off the salary cap last month. He’s coming off a pretty bad year, logging only 15 catches after dealing with an ACL injury this past season. That said, he’s expected to be healthy by OTAs next month and things are pretty optimistic right now. We’ll keep an eye out to see where he lands.
Steve Smith, WR, Free Agent: After he was officially cut from the Panthers yesterday, Smith dominated the headlines. He’s jumping right on the free agent train, however, as it’s been reported that he’ll be meeting with the Ravens during his first visit as an open-market WR. (That meeting will happen today.)
There should be a handful of teams showing some interest in the veteran Smith, who can still be an effective WR2 to the right team. He posted 64 receptions for 745 yards and four scores in 2013.
