NFL Updates: Edelman, Fitzpatrick, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 15, 2014
It’s been an interesting week so far on the free agency market in the NFL, and we’re just getting started. We’ll be seeing many more signings in the coming weeks, and all that activity should keep us occupied until the draft in May. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what everyone’s talking about this morning. Here’s the latest.
Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Detroit Lions: Pettigrew is back with the Lions, but he took a lengthy and peculiar road to get there yesterday. Thursday, he’d been linked to as many as five different NFL teams: the Jets, Giants, Texans, Raiders and Lions. Ultimately, he ended up signing back in with Detroit, however, as it was announced yesterday that he’d inked a $16 million deal for four years.
Even though there were all sorts of indications that Pettigrew would be leaving the Lions for either the Raiders or Jets, those rumors proved to be unfounded. He’ll be the No. 1 guy in Detroit and will help more for his blocking abilities than for his hands.

Charles Tillman, CB, Chicago Bears: Let’s stick in the NFC North for a moment and check out Tillman. He’ll be staying with the Bears this coming season, thanks to a one-year deal signed yesterday. There had been some speculation that he might possibly follow Lovie Smith down to Tampa Bay, but it wasn’t to be.
When healthy, Tillman is one of the best cornerbacks in football, but he’s getting up there in years. He’s got 12 NFL seasons under his belt, and has wrestled with knee and triceps injuries recently. Speaking of which, Tillman’s triceps still isn’t 100 percent; He’s still rehabbing. It shouldn’t be too much longer before he’s full-go, however.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Free Agent: The free agent QB class got a little deeper yesterday after the Titans released Fitzpatrick in a move pretty much everyone saw coming. Tennessee signed backup QB Charlie Whitehurst to a multi-year deal late in the week and it was only a matter of time before they’d cut ties with Fitzpatrick (he had a $500,000 roster bonus due if he’d stay on the team.
Time will tell what sort of market there is out there for Fitzpatrick. So far, we haven’t seen a whole lot of blockbuster movements on the QB front, so he may have to wait and see where some of the other dominoes fall before we can figure out who’s interested.
Julian Edelman, WR, Free Agent: Here’s a rather strange situation--which actually fits with the unpredictability of free agency. After all the rumors and posturing, Edelman may end up staying in New England after all. He and the team are reportedly working on a new deal which would keep the free agent WR in Patriot blue.
The new report is a bit odd, as Edelman reportedly turned down a three-year offer from New England earlier this week. That said, he’s scheduled to visit with the 49ers this weekend and the Cleveland Browns have been rumored to have some legitimate interest in his services. We’ll just have to wait and see where he lands.
