NFL Updates: Woodson, Vick, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 20, 2014
We’re just three days away from the next milestone in the 2014 NFL off-season, which is the annual owners’ meetings. We’re sure to see some wheeling and dealing during that period, but in the meantime there are still plenty of signings and potential moves to go over. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there.
Michael Vick, QB, Free Agent: So far during this free-agent period, no one has exactly been knocking down Vick’s door. That said, he will make his first visit to a team this weekend when he checks out the New York Jets, who are in the market for some legitimate competition to second-year QB Geno Smith.
The Jets may be getting a bit desperate at this point, as they’ve failed to make any splashes in free agency aside from new WR Eric Decker--despite their significant cap space. Meanwhile, their divisional rival Patriots and in-city rival Giants have gone on shopping sprees that make the Jets look comparatively tame.

Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans: Speaking of the Jets, they’re among the teams who could potentially be interested in Johnson, thanks to his willingness for a contract restructuring. The Titans are said to be sellers here, and could end up dealing him before any organized team activities begin.
Aside from the Jets, the Raiders and Dolphins have both been mentioned as potential dancing partners for the Titans. That said, we probably won’t see anything done in the immediate future, as Tennessee isn’t under the gun due to bonuses or guaranteed money at the moment.
Devin Hester, WR, Free Agent: We haven’t checked in on Hester for a while, so let’s see what he’s been up to. The latest report concerning him says that he’s looking for a deal in the neighborhood of $4 million per year. That sounds pretty steep to us (and pretty much everyone else). Even though he’s likely the greatest return man ever, his impact on the game took a major hit a couple of seasons ago when they moved the kickoffs forward.
Still, Hester will land somewhere. He visited with the Falcons on Tuesday, and has said that he’d love to play for the Dolphins (he was a star at the University of Miami). Teams like the Buccaneers and the Chiefs have also been mentioned as potential suitors here.
Charles Woodson, FS, Oakland Raiders: Late last night, a report surfaced on Woodson, and it’s sure to delight Raiders fans. The 37-year-old vet has agreed to a one-year deal, according to the report, and will be staying in Oakland for at least one more season.
Woodson put up some nice numbers in 2013. He had 97 tackles (a career-high), three forced fumbles and an interception. There really was no indication he was going to go anywhere else; It was pretty much Oakland or retirement.
