NFL Updates: Moreno, Newton, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 21, 2014
The annual NFL owners’ meetings are set to kick off in just a couple of days, which will provide plenty of juicy rumors and speculation about potential deals. In the meantime, there’s still plenty to talk about, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers: Yesterday, we started getting our first reports about Newton’s ankle surgery. According to the news, the procedure went well, and he’s officially entered recovery mode. (He had surgery to repair ligament damage in his left ankle.)
Newton’s timetable to get back to full strength stands at around four months. He should be good to go for most of training camp (though he could miss the beginning), but won’t have an opportunity to gather chemistry with his new wide receivers this off-season. We’ll have to see how that affects things in the early-going.

Devin Hester, WR, Atlanta Falcons: We’ve been following Hester’s off-season since he became a free agent, and now he officially has a home once again. After spending all eight of his NFL years with the Bears, he signed with Atlanta on a three-year deal yesterday.
At this point, it’s unclear whether or not the Falcons will elect to utilize him in the offensive game, but you can bet he’ll be fielding kicks and punts from now on. He has 13 punt return touchdowns and five kick return scores, including one return TD last season (punt).
Steelers FA News: The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a couple of noteworthy free agents in their building for visits recently, though so far nothing has come of it. Lance Moore was in yesterday, but the team didn’t sign him to a contract. Likewise, free agent RB Maurice Jones-Drew didn’t ink anything during his visit, either.
The Jones-Drew situation makes sense. He’s looking for more money than the Steelers are willing to spend (or can spend--they’re just north of $2 million under the cap). Moore might be another story though. He could fit as a replacement piece for departed WR Jerricho Cotchery, who is in Carolina now.
Knowshon Moreno, RB, Free Agent: Let’s take a moment to check in on Moreno, as we haven’t visited with him in a few days. The latest news there is that he’ll be visiting the Dolphins today, and could potentially sign up in South Beach as a complement (or potential starter) to Lamar Miller.
Moreno was released from the Broncos earlier this month after logging 1038 yards on 241 carries in 15 starts during 2013. He’s one of the top RB names on the free agent market, but the demand has been lukewarm for the position thus far.
