NFL Updates: Schaub, Vick, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 22, 2014
The annual NFL owners’ meetings get kicked off tomorrow, and we’re sure to see a flurry of activity and rumors over the next few days. In the meantime, there’s still plenty to talk about on the free agent front, so let’s take a minute to go over some of this morning’s headlines and see what everyone’s up to right now. Here’s the latest.
Matt Schaub, QB, Oakland Raiders: In one of yesterday’s big moves, the Raiders acquired Schaub from the Texans for a late-round draft pick (a sixth-rounder). There are plenty of implications to this deal, not the least of which being that there will be a new starting QB in Oakland this season.
The Raiders have been making lots of noise this off-season trying to put together a winner in 2014. They’ve signed no less than 10 players this month who are all north of 29 years old.
As for the Texans, this is a virtual guarantee that they’ll be choosing a QB with their first overall pick at this year’s draft. Rumor has it that they’re interested in Blake Bortles. On the flip side, Oakland won’t be needing to pick a QB now, so that will switch up a lot of mocks.

LeGarrette Blount, RB, Free Agent: We’ve got a possible new destination for Blount in 2014, as news broke on him yesterday afternoon. He’ll reportedly be visiting with the Steelers tomorrow, and he’ll be the second free agent RB to come to Pittsburgh in the last couple of days. (Maurice Jones-Drew also came calling.)
Pittsburgh has their starter (Le’Veon Bell), so Blount would likely end up being a complementary piece there. He’s been linked to a couple of other teams this off-season as well, including the Ravens and his old team the Patriots.
Kenny Britt, WR, Free Agent: It’ll be interesting to see where Britt lands, given the fact that there’s a ton of free agent wide receivers available this off-season via the draft and free agency--not to mention the fact that he’s coming off an utterly dreadful season in Tennessee.
There could be some light at the end of the tunnel for Britt, and some hope for the future. He’ll reportedly be visiting with the Bills very soon, and he’s also rumored to have some potential interest in both the Redskins and the Patriots. Expect a relatively short deal here as Britt tries to prove he’s still got something left in the tank.
Michael Vick, QB, New York Jets: Don’t expect the circus atmosphere surrounding the Jets in the New York media to slow down any time soon. After the team released Mark Sanchez last night, the Jets announced they had signed Vick to a one-year deal valued at $5 million.
New York has long been rumored to have great interest in Vick, and they proved that yesterday. He provides a real challenger to Geno Smith’s starting spot, but carries a lot of baggage with him. Love or hate the move, it’ll be an interesting season in the Big Apple.
