NFL Updates: Schaub, Jackson, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 23, 2014
Today marks the beginning of the annual NFL owners’ meetings, which will bring forth a whole rash of new activity and rumors. To mark the occasion, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there as we creep closer and closer to the season.
Jermichael Finley, TE, Free Agent: Those teams in need of a TE and looking in Finley’s general direction will have to wait quite a while before anything is certain. This weekend, a report emerged updating his status. It said he’s around two months away from being in a position to be able to sign with a team, thanks to his health issues.
Finley is coming off spinal fusion surgery, which makes him a big question mark heading into the 2014 season. Still, that hasn’t stopped his name from being floated around in rumors. He visited with the Seahawks recently, and has been linked as a potential candidate to the Giants and Packers. A one-year test deal seems to be in the cards here.

DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: Maybe we’ll see some movement on this issue at the owners meetings, but for now let’s check out the latest with Jackson. Here’s the deal: The Eagles are strapped for cash, fighting against the salary cap. They’ve been testing the waters for a trade, but if nothing comes to fruition, they may simply be forced to cut him. He’s reportedly unwilling to restructure his contract to facilitate a deal.
Reportedly, both the Seahawks and the 49ers (among others) have made inquiries as to the potential price tag attached to Jackson, so we could see him shipped off to the west coast before all is finished. Since the two teams mentioned are such rivals, maybe Philly could get something of a bidding war going to maximize value here. We’ll see what happens.
Matt Schaub, QB, Oakland Raiders: Well, we all figured this was coming, but maybe not quite this fast. The Raiders--via Dennis Allen--have already anointed newly-arrived QB Matt Schaub as the starter. The move isn’t the least bit surprising, as they’re paying him a boatload of money ($11 million) despite giving up a low-round draft pick for him.
Schaub is coming off an abysmal season in 2013, and gets a chance to turn over a new leaf this season. The Raiders are hoping for the best-case scenario here, which is potentially making themselves contenders behind Schaub and the rest of their newly-acquired veterans for the next two or three years to come.
Minor Weekend Moves: In what was a relatively quiet Saturday, we saw a handful of minor moves. Here are a few.
The Falcons parted ways with FB Bradie Ewing, who was only able to play two games in two years (injuries).
Kansas City waived DL Brandon Moore.
Houston signed safety Kendrick Lewis to a $795,000 one-year deal ($100,000 guaranteed). The move reunites him with Romeo Crennel, who is the Texans’ DC.
