NFL Updates: Jackson, Jones-Drew, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 24, 2014
We’ve reached the beginning of a new workweek, and as depressing as that may sound, we’ll be able to pass the time by diverting our attention toward the NFL. There are plenty of developments and potential moves being talked about at the annual owners’ meetings this week, so we should see lots of activity. Let’s take a look at this morning’s headlines.
Nate Burleson, WR, Free Agent: We may have to wait a little while to see any concrete move on this, but we’ll share the speculation anyway. Yesterday, a report came out that stated the Cowboys were interested in acquiring free agent WR Nate Burleson, but we likely won’t see a signing or any outward indications shown until after the draft in May.
Here’s the skinny on Burleson: He’s 32, and has only played in 15 games over the past two seasons thanks to injury. That said, he’s probably still got something in the tank and can be productive when healthy. He put up 73 receptions for 757 yards in Detroit a few seasons back.

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Free Agent: The clock is ticking on Jones-Drew’s window of opportunity. It would be in his best interest to sign with a team before the draft (as most of the backup RB jobs will be filled after that), but his asking price has hampered his leverage in searching out a new landing spot.
Jones-Drew is reportedly looking to get around $3.5 million dollars annually, and if you think that sounds a bit high for an aging RB past his prime, you’re right. The market has been tepid this off-season, not just for MJD, but for all running backs. He’ll have to swallow his pride if he wants to sign up somewhere in the next few weeks. Pittsburgh is reportedly still interested at a lower cost.
DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: We’ve got a couple of tidbits to report on the Jackson situation this morning. A couple of teams have been mentioned as potential suitors for his services over the past day or so, and we’ll start out west. Despite reports claiming the contrary, the 49ers say they haven’t made any inquiries into D-Jax’s potential availability and have had no discussions with Philly concerning a possible deal.
On the flip side, the New York Jets appear willing to tangle with Jackson’s sketchy demeanor now that they’ve signed his ex-teammate Michael Vick. (And Jets owner Woody Johnson confirmed their interest yesterday.) The Jets have the cap space to accommodate his deal ($10 million annually) and need another top-shelf WR alongside Eric Decker.
If nothing comes of the Niners or Jets, the Seahawks, Panthers and Raiders could be in play as well.
Mike Williams, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Here’s a strange story from the headlines this morning. Yesterday afternoon, Tampa Bay WR Mike Williams was taken to the hospital after being stabbed in the thigh at his home. His brother is reportedly the main suspect at the moment.
It sounds like Williams is okay, which is the important thing, but there isn’t a whole lot of information out there at the moment. We’ll keep an eye on this one as the story develops.
