NFL Updates: Jackson, Jones-Drew, Off-Season Schedule and More

March 25, 2014

See the Latest Odds

With the NFL owners meetings continuing this week, we’re getting some new tidbits about potential moves and news items each day. This morning is no different, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.

DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: Let’s get into our (what seems like) daily update on Jackson’s status, as there are a couple of new items on him this morning. For one, it seems like he’s got another potential suitor if he is indeed cut, as the Raiders would reportedly go after him if he’s cut. Oakland doesn’t wish to give up a draft pick for him in a trade, however.
On the flip side, a couple of teams have taken themselves out of the running for his services. Both the Seahawks and the Panthers have no interest in signing him, as his price tag (a $12.75 million cap hit) would be too much of a detriment to their roster-rebuilding efforts.

Jermicheal Finley, TE, Free Agent: Finley’s NFL future just got a little cloudier with a report that emerged yesterday. Apparently, he failed his physical when visiting with the Seahawks, which calls his health further into doubt.
Finley is coming off spinal fusion surgery, and remains hopeful that his doctor will give him a clean bill of health in the near future. That said, even if his surgeon signs off, it doesn’t mean Finley will be able to play football again. Regardless, neck injuries are dangerous territory, so we don’t expect him to be the same player even if he does somehow make it back.

Mark Sanchez, QB, Free Agent: After Sanchez hit the market as a free man once the Jets signed Michael Vick late last week, there was plenty of speculation as to where he might end up. The destination that seemed to make the most sense was St. Louis, given the fact that their offensive coordinator (Brian Schottenheimer) worked with him in New York.
That said, there’s now a report saying he’ll be signing with the Eagles, and will be the No. 2 guy behind Nick Foles. Strangely enough, it seems that New York and Philadelphia will effectively be trading backup quarterbacks. Still, the Eagles are giving his shoulder a hard look to make sure he’s healthy before they ink him to a deal. Stay tuned.

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Free Agent: Let’s end things today with a look at Jones-Drew and his potential destinations. There are reportedly four teams in the hunt here, and they include Pittsburgh, Miami, New England and the New York Jets.
Each of the four teams will supposedly be meeting with MJD’s team at the owners’ meetings this week, so we could see a deal very soon. He most recently visited with the Steelers last week, but nothing was hammered out (likely due to his high asking price).
