NFL Updates: Johnson, Burleson, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 5, 2014
As we enter the weekend, the NFL news won’t be slowing up. There are plenty of potential moves and headline-making players out there to check up on, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Chris Johnson, RB, Free Agent: Yesterday’s big news took absolutely no one by surprise, as it had been common knowledge in the days leading up to the move. Johnson was released by the Titans, officially hitting the free agent market. Tennessee released a statement that said they had attempted to trade the veteran RB, but were unable to find a suitor. (The Jets, Bills, Dolphins and Falcons were said to have been involved in talks.)
The move frees up $6 million in cap space for the Titans, and will bring about a committee approach in the Tennessee backfield during 2014. The team has Shonn Greene, Dexter McCluster, Jackie Battle and Leon Washington on their roster, and they’re expected to be in the market for an RB in the draft next month. Tre Mason, Ka’Deem Carey or Bishop Sankey could be possible targets.
Now, where does that leave Johnson? Well, the most logical places would be the Jets, Giants and Cowboys, but Dallas said yesterday afternoon that they weren’t interested in him. This weekend will give us a lot of information on that front.

Nate Burleson, WR, Free Agent: Today is a big day for the Browns, and potentially Burleson as well. He’ll be visiting Cleveland today, and if both sides like what they see, a deal could be imminent.
Burleson visited with the Dolphins earlier this week, and his name has been thrown out there as a possible Patriots acquisition as well. He’s coming off a 39-reception, 461-yard effort in Detroit in 2013, but only found the end zone once.
The 11-year veteran Burleson has shown some flashes of greatness over the years, but has only eclipsed 1,000 yards once in his career.
DeSean Jackson, WR, Washington Redskins: New Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson is making waves in Philadelphia, even after the team released him. A report came out yesterday saying that Jackson showed some major insubordination toward head coach Chip Kelly last season, and cussed him out in front of teammates on more than one occasion.
The report went on to say that Jackson wasn’t well liked in the locker room, which helps explain his quick downfall in the City of Brotherly Love.
Regardless, the Eagles will have to deal with him twice a year now, since the Redskins snatched him up quickly after Philly severed ties. It’ll be an interesting year in the NFC East.
