NFL Updates: Haden, Johnson, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 6, 2014
It’s been a busy weekend so far in the NFL, especially for the off-season. We’re sure to see plenty more headlines and potential moves today, as there are lots of storylines brewing. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Chris Johnson, RB, Free Agent: From now until the day he signs with a team, most of the NFL news out there will be focused on Johnson. Fortunately for those burned out on the topic, it shouldn’t take too long. The veteran RB is expected to ink a deal by the middle of this week, as interested teams have known he’d likely be released for weeks now and have had time to kick the tires.
That said, there hasn’t exactly been a rush to sign Johnson. The Jets are probably the most interested party, and they hadn’t even reached out to his camp as of yesterday. Other links have been downplayed, as the Cowboys and Rams have all but taken themselves out of the running. Stay tuned here.

Titans Backfield: While we’re on the subject, let’s take a look at the possible future of the backfield in Tennessee. Now that Johnson is gone, the team is left with Shonn Greene and Dexter McCluster as the lead running backs (along with Jackie Battle and Leon Washington), but the plan is that they’ll draft another one.
The Titans’ GM Ruston Webster says that pick will be a three-down RB, one with all-around abilities such as speed, power and size. It remains to be seen who they’ll be targeting, so they’ll be an interesting team to watch in the weeks leading up to next month’s draft.
Joe Haden, CB, Cleveland Browns: Haden is a popular fixture in this space, as he’s one of the best corners in the league right now. Browns fans will be happy to hear the comments he made this weekend, as he reiterated his desire to remain in Cleveland to help the team turn things around.
Haden said he wasn’t going to “run away to go somewhere else,” which makes it sound like he’ll be inking an extension with the Browns sometime in the near future. This is the last year of his rookie deal, so the team will want to tie him down before he can hit the open market. Haden characterized his and the team’s discussions about an extension so far as “positive.”
Other Signings: There were a few minor signings happening late last week, taking more free agents off the market. Champ Bailey inked a two-year deal with the Saints, and he’ll look to stay healthy this season after playing just five games (foot) in 2013.
Also, Major Wright reunited with his old coach Lovie Smith down in Tampa Bay. He’s on a one-year deal with the Bucs and is coming off a 100-tackle, two-interception season in Chicago.
