NFL Updates: Johnson Latest, Mock Top 5, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 9, 2014
With less than a month left until the 2014 NFL draft, the anticipation is running high among fans. In the meantime, there’s still plenty to talk about, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league. Here’s a snapshot of a few topics that are making headlines right now.
Chris Johnson Latest: Like we seemingly have done every day lately, let’s check in on Johnson and see how his situation is shaping up. The latest news on Johnson, unfortunately, is that there is no news. As of last night, he still had no visits scheduled with NFL teams, which makes the weekend prediction that he’d have a new home by the middle of this week look very dubious indeed.
Johnson’s most likely destination is still New York with the Jets, who have given every indication that they’d like to have him around. We’d imagine this situation will work itself out (or at least come away from this standstill) by the weekend at the latest, so stay tuned.

Colts TEs: Yesterday, we got some insight as to the plans of the Colts offense heading into the 2014 season. The team will be utilizing both of their tight ends--Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener--quite a bit this year, and the two will often be on the field at the same time.
Head coach Chuck Pagano expanded on the idea, saying both players give them lots of options offensively, and that they’ll be looking to create mismatches on the field with their 2TE sets. Look for that area of the Colts offense to take a step forward; If the running game can follow suit, it should be another solid year in Indy.
Doug Martin, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: It’s been a while since we’ve checked in on Martin, so let’s see how his off-season is shaking out. Yesterday at the team’s workouts, he was quoted as saying that he has a full range of motion in his surgically-repaired shoulder. He tore his labrum last season during Week 7 and had to go under the knife.
A healthy Martin is great news for the Buccaneers, as they’ve said they’ll be relying on him as the lead back in 2014. Head coach Lovie Smith recently called Martin his “bell cow,” but the team will also be rotating in Mike James and Bobby Rainey.
Possible Top 5?: Now that we’re just a few weeks away from the 2014 NFL Draft, it’s time for everyone to start making their predictions as to where the noteworthy players will fall. We’ll throw our hat into the ring along with the prognosticators and give you our best guess--as of right now--as to which players might go in the top five picks.
