NFL Updates: Manning, Dalton, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 12, 2014
We’ve reached another weekend in this NFL off-season, which means we’re that much closer to next month’s draft. In the space between, there are plenty of topics to go over, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the notable players out there who are making waves. Here’s the latest.
Josh Freeman, QB, Free Agent: We’ll start out today with a little tidbit out of New York. It concerns free agent signal-caller Josh Freeman, who will be working out for the Giants. This will be his second visit, as he also worked out for the Bears earlier in the off-season.
Freeman is coming off another disappointing year with the Buccaneers and Vikings, and would be serving as the Giants’ backup QB behind Eli Manning if they like him enough to ink him to a deal. Stay tuned.

Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants: Speaking of Manning, let’s stick in New York and check in on him. He made headlines this week when he went under the knife for a debridement procedure on his left ankle, which followed a high-ankle sprain he suffered in December.
What’s interesting is a report that came out yesterday saying Manning may have injured his ankle playing basketball at Duke last week, and thus needed the surgery. There’s nothing concrete to say he actually participated in any on-court shenanigans, but there’s proof he was there. Regardless, he’ll be good to go by training camp and should be up and around within six weeks.
Muhammad Wilkerson, DE, New York Jets: Let’s stick in the Big Apple for a moment and check out Wilkerson, who made headlines with some comments yesterday. The three-year veteran said he’s not planning on holding out this summer if the team decides to pick up the option on his contract instead of extending him to a more lucrative deal, which should put an end to speculation that he’d be leveraging his way into a new contract.
Wilkerson also said that his agent is currently in contact with the Jets brass, so we could see an extension in the works soon. Wilkerson is coming off a 10.5-sack season, and has played a full 16 games in all three years he’s been a Jet.
Andy Dalton, QB, Cincinnati Bengals: Bengals fans will be happy to hear how Dalton’s been spending some of his time this off-season. He recently spent a five-day period with QB guru Tom House, and the two were working on improving Dalton’s accuracy and throwing mechanics.
Dalton said the two “tweaked a few things” and makes it sound like he’ll be throwing harder and faster during 2014. House has quite a track record to his credit. He’s worked with such notable names as Drew Brees, Carson Palmer and Tom Brady.
