NFL Updates: Chris Johnson, Peyton Manning, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 18, 2014
We’ve reached the end of the workweek, and the last couple of days have given us plenty of NFL news to talk about. There will still be plenty of happenings leading up to the draft, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look at what’s going on around the league. Here’s the latest.
Chris Johnson, RB, New York Jets: Just because Johnson finally signed a deal (two years and a max of $9 million) with the Jets doesn’t mean he’ll be out of the news any time soon. There’s a new report out there that says the team has some significant concerns over his knee condition, specifically some arthritis in the area.
Johnson’s arthritis is rooted from his meniscus tear last year. He played through the injury and hasn’t sat out any games in five seasons. For what it’s worth, he himself calls the reports “inaccurate,” so there could be more to this than we think.
Whether or not this becomes a problem down the road remains to be seen. If he’s healthy, he’ll form a potent one-two combination with Chris Ivory in the Jets backfield.

Terrelle Pryor, QB, Oakland Raiders: By this time next week, Pryor may not be a Raider. According to a report that came out late this week, the team is trying to trade their former starting QB away before the beginning of their off-season program (that begins on Tuesday). It’s thought that the Raiders will release him if they can’t find a partner to trade with.
As of right now, Oakland believes they’re set at the QB position. Matt Schaub will be starting, and Matt McGloin will be in the No. 2 position. Most people think they’ll draft a quarterback next month as well.
Pryor won’t land a starting gig anywhere, but he’ll catch on with another team if he’s released.
Peyton Manning, QB, Denver Broncos: Here’s an interesting scenario out of Denver. It’s been suggested very recently (yesterday, in fact) that the Broncos may have Manning throwing less during this upcoming season. He’s coming off 659 pass attempts (and a 68.3 completion percentage) along with records for touchdowns (55) and yards (5,477). It would seem counterproductive to the offense to have him throw less, right?
Well, the thinking is that the Broncos would like to beef up their running game and allow Manning to gain some confidence in his backs. The result would be a more well-balanced offense that could control the clock a little better and keep the defense off the field (which was a weak spot for the Broncos in 2013).
That said, he is Peyton Manning, and he will throw the football. We expect him to pass quite a bit this year, but watch for a bit of an emergence from the likes of Montee Ball.
