NFL Updates: Johnson, Romo, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 19, 2014
We’ve (finally) reached the weekend, and it’s been a busy few days in the NFL. We’re sure to see plenty more storylines playing out Saturday and Sunday, so with that in mind let’s take a look at a few of the headlines that are developing around the league. Here’s the latest.
Chris Johnson, RB, New York Jets: We promise we’ll stop talking about Johnson eventually, but it won’t be today. His arrival in New York has prompted immediate optimism for Gang Green, who are hoping that he’ll be the new LaDainian Tomlinson for the franchise.
The scenario is plausible: Tomlinson came to the Jets in 2010 and promptly put up 914 yards and six touchdowns (and caught 52 passes as well) on the way to the AFC Championship Game.
Johnson, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing season in Tennessee, during which he averaged a paltry 3.9 yards per carry. The thinking is that he’ll be revitalized in the Big Apple behind a much better O-line. He and Chris Ivory could help the Jets do some major damage in the division this season.

A.J. Green, WR, Cincinnati Bengals: Bengals fans will want to keep an eye on what the club is doing with Green’s contract, as it’s going to become an issue down the road. They’re expected to pick up the fifth-year option on his deal by May 3, but as of yet there’s been no word that the two sides have engaged in discussions over an extension.
If no deal is reached, the Bengals could technically hold onto Green through 2016 with a franchise tag, but most indications say a deal seems imminent. We’d imagine they’ll at least try to take care of it before camp opens, so keep an eye out for that.
Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys: Making major news late this week was Troy Aikman, who expressed some concerns about Romo--not necessarily as a player, but as an injured commodity.
Romo just had back surgery in December, marking the second time he’s had such an operation in the span of a year. Aikman likened the scenario to his own situation as a professional, but conceded that Romo will have more recovery time than he did before stepping on the field.
Whether or not this becomes an issue down the road remains to be seen, but it should weigh on the minds of Cowboys fans each time their star QB steps onto the field.
