NFL Updates: Schedule Release, Smith, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 23, 2014
We’ve officially reached the middle of the week, and the NFL news is running strong. The off-season workouts are in full swing for much of the league, so there’s plenty to catch up on as we get our first glimpses of many big-name stars out there. Here’s a look at some of the headlines this morning.
Schedule Release: One quick note right off the bat: The NFL will be releasing the 2014 schedule tonight at 8 PM ET. You can find immediate coverage on NFL Network and ESPN.
USA TODAY Sports
Alex Smith, QB, Kansas City Chiefs: Smith and the Chiefs are coming off a successful--yet ultimately short--season under new head coach Andy Reid. It appears the team wants to keep their QB around, as Smith said yesterday that his camp has been in negotiations with the Chiefs about a possible contract extension beyond this season.
Smith’s in the last year of his deal and will earn $7.5 million this season. Although it doesn’t appear an extension is imminent, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it happen in the very near future.
Chris Johnson, RB, New York Jets: We haven’t talked about Johnson in a couple of days, so let’s see what the latest take on him is. The new Jets RB will be limited in workouts this week, thanks to a troublesome knee that saw arthroscopic surgery (torn meniscus) in the off-season and has reportedly caused a bout of arthritis.
That said, the team is optimistic that Johnson will be able to come through when needed this year. Jets QB Geno Smith called his new RB a “home-run hitter” and should be glad for the extra dimension in New York’s ground game.
Josh McCown, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Buccaneers didn’t sign ex-Bears QB Josh McCown to sit the bench, so there’s been little doubt who’s got a leg up in the starter competition. He’s beginning the team’s minicamp as the No. 1 guy ahead of Mike Glennon, and will have to stumble (combined with a Glennon surge) in camp and the preseason for a change to take place.
McCown is coming off a very impressive season filling in for Jay Cutler during five starts in Chicago in 2013. In his time on the field, he put up 13 touchdowns to just one interception.
Ryan Tannehill, QB, Miami Dolphins: It’s safe to say that the much talked-about connection between Mike Wallace and Ryan Tannehill didn’t quite materialize last season. Tannehill had some issues with his deep-ball accuracy, completing just 16 of 64 passes headed 20+ yards downfield last year.
That said, the Dolphins offense--Tannehill specifically--is going to be focused on long passes in 2014 so that they can utilize Wallace’s deep threat. Whether or not the system will thrive under new OC Bill Lazor remains to be seen, but at least they’re openly addressing a glaring issue.
Week 1 Preseason Schedule: Now that the preseason schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the preseason.
