NFL Updates: Playoff Expansion, Lions, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 26, 2014
After a long week of off-season workouts and the football conversations that come along with them, we’ve reached another weekend in the NFL. There’s plenty to chew on over these two days before we get back to the grind so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Playoff Expansion Coming?: If your team just barely missed the NFL postseason last year, this will be music to your ears. According to commissioner Roger Goodell, the owners will be discussing the possibility of allowing 14 teams to compete in the playoffs. That discussion will occur on May 20 at the Spring League Meeting.
Whether or not this is a good idea remains up for debate. Allowing 14 teams in waters down the postseason, but also allows teams finishing on hot streaks to continue their seasons and possibly catch lightning in a bottle down the stretch.
Our take? The expansion will occur. Maybe not this season, but it’s definitely coming. There’s just too much extra money involved.

Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit Lions: One of the most interesting teams to watch in 2014 will be the Detroit Lions. They’ve never quite been able to get it going despite having some flat-out awesome playmakers on their offense, but that could be changing this year.
Stafford was quoted late this week as saying that the team will be just as aggressive with the ball under their new offense. There had been some concern that they’d be dialing back the long passes in favor of more short crossing routes.
When you’ve got the best wide receiver in the league in Calvin Johnson, short crossing routes don’t really sound all that smart. Still, you can expect the team to set up intricate catch-and-run plays that will maximize their talents (not to mention help out Stafford’s completion percentage) as well. Stay tuned on this one.
Fantasy Corner: This week, we’ve been taking a glance at each of the positions in this year’s upcoming fantasy football draft. Today it’s time for wide receivers, and with a new crop of emerging talent coming out of 2013, it shouldn’t be too hard to get a top-shelf player.
The big-name WRs are spread across the NFL, and your fantasy league will likely follow suit, with everyone getting at least one solid name. With that said, let’s take a look at our top 10 names at WR right now.
