NFL Updates: Draft Speculation, Off-Season Schedule and More
May 7, 2014
Just one more day until the NFL Draft (finally) and then we can end this speculation and guesswork and see what’s really going to happen with the 2014 class. Until then, we’ve got some more speculating and guessing to do, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the headlines this morning.
Peyton Manning, QB, Denver Broncos: Let’s start things out today with the always-newsworthy Peyton Manning. Yesterday he made waves when he announced (on “The Late Show with David Letterman”) that he’s not back to 100 percent following his 2011 neck surgery. Hmm…could have fooled us, what with those NFL-record 55 touchdowns and all.
Manning also said that he feels better this year than he has since getting the surgery, and anticipates a gradual return to normalcy for him. The 38-year-old will be heading into his 17th NFL season this year and returns as a heavy favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl once again.

Rams No. 2 Pick: Let’s get back into some draft speculation again (because who, at this point, isn’t sick of more draft speculation?) and check out the Rams. They own the No. 2 overall pick, and have some pundits scratching their heads when it comes to predicting their action.
Rams GM Les Snead made some comments regarding the pick yesterday, indicating that what his team does depends on whom Houston selects at No. 1 (and most people think that’ll be Jadeveon Clowney). Names that have been tossed out there as potential No. 2 picks include Greg Robinson (OT), Sammy Watkins (WR), or even Johnny Manziel (QB).
Snead’s job will likely hinge on having a good draft here. If St. Louis continues to stall in what’s become one of the most competitive divisions in football, changes will be coming.
New QB for KC?: Here’s another very intriguing story that made the rounds yesterday. The Chiefs reportedly might be in the market for a quarterback at the NFL draft tomorrow. Contract extension talks with their current No. 1 QB Alex Smith apparently haven’t been going too well, so the team may need to hedge its bets as it moves forward after a successful--but ultimately disappointing--season.
Kansas City might be on the list of a handful of teams that could potentially select a signal-caller in the first round. Here’s the problem, though: They’ve only got one pick (No. 23 overall) in the first 86 picks of the draft. Selecting another QB would seem kind of risky, so maybe this is just a negotiating tactic. Still interesting nonetheless.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
